There's something fishy about this website:
http://www.rockinandroid.com/
Essentially it's an English-speaking shop that sells doujin games to people who can't go to Japan and buy them directly at Comiket, but that's not what irks me about the place.
Evidence comes from here:

Abridged version for those who don't want to wade through it:

Okay yeah I'm fairly sure they stole NDT's translation.
See the song title that's almost covered up by the copyright crap? That's part of the translation done by NDT. The title of the song is originally in Japanese.
I'd appreciate it if the topic creator changed the thread title to "Western site ripping off fan translations of doujin shmups".
Avoid this site.
If you really want Platine games, register on ShoppingMallJapan and buy them off here. |
The site is also heavily promoting Orange Juice's games (aka- creators of Suguri and Acceleration of Suguri) which have also been unofficially translated into English. Unfortunately, I haven't found any screenshots with the game's dialog because they probably know they're going to get canned if we ever found out about that.
EDIT: This could be disguised as an April Fools prank if they are caught though, considering the timing of the site's discovery, so yeah.
EDIT NEW VER.: Well, it's confirmed that they legitimately have Orange Juice's stuff. Then again, it could still be a prank for this was uploaded on April 1st...

This news came out waaaay before April 1.
The big question is: Where are they pulling the translations from? In fact, some of the shots have been confirmed by the shmups.com forums to be using fan translations...so this means...

I'm a little disappointed this thread wasn't about androids rocking out. :/
If the company selling these doujin games were to cut a profit to the translators, would it be legal then? Where does the legality of profiting from fan translations come from?
I mean, it'd be a waste to just translate the games from scratch especially if it was a worse translation than the fan ones, but to sell the fan translated copies as original with nothing going towards them seems unfair.
It'd be interesting if the original developers bought the fan translations somehow and made them official.

Perhaps we could look at how the staff of Cave Story WiiWare interacted with Gideon Zhi, when using his (read: authorized and primarily prepared by him) translation patch.
That may not exactly apply here, however. I take it that Gideon allowed them to use his translation (though I am not exactly sure); NDT purportedly knew nothing about this, as Elixir has pointed out.
