I played a lot of Bubble Bobble as a kid and didn’t understand why you were collecting the letters of the word “extend” to get an extra life. I get it now, but even knowing an extend is an extra life it only feels correct in shmups (a term I enjoy, apparently unlike most in this thread).
I think a lot of gaming terminology I knew as a kid in Australia was influenced by British magazines. Not sure how accurate this is, but I have a vague idea “platformer” didn’t catch on in the US until relatively recently? I feel like I’ve used it all my life, and it’s in those old British magazines.
On acronyms, “snez” sounds strange to me because it’s always been “sness”. Saying the letters out loud to me is as bizarre as talking about going ess cee you bee ay diving or something. I have heard Australians saying it that way in more recent years, I think because of American influence through the internet.
Also, Seega forever! I’ve heard how it’s pronounced at the start of Mega Drive games, they’re wrong. The technology wasn’t there yet for the long e sound.
