The “what’s the best game to play for exactly one hour” question was me, and both of the panel’s interpretations were more or less correct.
At the time I submitted it, I was super busy between medical stuff, working from home and entertaining a two year old in lockdown. The only time I was finding to play games on my own was every second night when it was my wife’s turn to do bathtime/bedtime. This process happens to take almost exactly one hour, and so I was trying hard at the time to squeeze as much valuable game time as possible into that slot.
So many games start with a lengthy introduction/tutorial section where you can’t achieve anything in the first hour, and by the second hour, for me two nights later, the momentum and education of the introductory section are lost. On the other side of the coin, arcade and score-attack games are often difficult to keep up for an hour.
Funnily enough, two of the games I did settle on were Pac-Man CE and Yakuza. A full-length race in F1, Forza or Gran Turismo (split over two sittings where necessary) worked well too. Good times were also had with one-hour online sessions of Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. I’ve kept Yakuza up - I now play about an hour of whatever Yakuza I’m up to when I’m not on bedtime duty.
PS. I was outraged to discover through this episode that there are a lot of Billys (Billies?) submitting questions on the patreon that aren’t me. Ridiculous.
