The New Mario RPG looks extremely underwhelming. Part of me is glad it appears to be a shot-for-shot remake, but they could have done a lot more. It also lacks the same kind of charming visual update as something like the Link’s Awakening remake. I will try to reserve judgment until I see Culex.

We didn’t see much of the peach game, but what we saw was not very impressive either.

Seeing Mario do that pantomiming scene as a fully-rendered 3D model felt really weird. It made sense on the SNES when we were already conditioned to be using our imagination, but seeing a high-res Mario snap around to eight inter-cardinal positions and suddenly swap models with Bowser doesn’t work the same way as it did 25 years ago.

BluntForceMummy Glad it looks as psychedelic as Mario always should have been, but there’d sure as hell better be an option to mute the talking flower.

Other thoughts:

Impressed at breadth of MGS collection, also curious about it being labeled “volume 1” when it contains the majority of noteworthy games in the series (and then some). I’d be a little surprised if “volume 2” included MGSV but maybe I have it wrong. They are cowards for not remastering Twin Snakes though.
Was genuinely startled to discover Vampire Survivors is not an actual Castlevania spinoff lmao. Maybe the most brazenly specific “inspiration” I’ve ever seen in a video game but I ain’t complaining. And evidently neither is Konami. Not sure Nintendo would be so chill if someone made an almost-Mario that bold. Anyway, looks like fun co-op.
Is Star Ocean 2 worth it if I played the first few hours of the (remake of) the first one and found it charming in a dopey 90s animu sort of way but a little grindy?
A little bit curious to finally play Bam Ham City in a portable format due to the involvement of Paul Dini + Kevin Conroy, but based on playing Bam Asylum years ago my expectations are not high. Those games are damn ugly btw… what’s the excuse for a game based on comic books to look like that?
Is the new DQM a remake or an original? I don’t know the series that well. The music sure did sound like Sugiyama’s, but he is dead…!
No clue why Nintendo uploaded the Baten Kaitos HD trailer separately to their channel instead of putting it in the Direct but, uh, seems cruel. I’m guessing their sales expectations for that one are rock fucking bottom. :(

that was good! mario RPG looks neat, pikmin all day, a non-NSMB 2D mario, finally a dragon quest monsters game. MGS even! although learning that none of the games are on the cart is kinda butt, even if i was just gonna get it on playstations anyway

That Princess Peach game looks neat. Metal Gear Solid collection is surprisingly generous and as a newly-converted Dragon Quest Monsters lover, I’m pumped that they’re theming one around my favorite mainline Dragon Quest. lol re: Super Mario RPG. Star Ocean deserves to look better than it does. Did anyone else think the new 2D Mario looks kind of… Bare? The level design reminded me more of Super Mario Run than, yknow, any of the games that are more meaningfully designed.

Funbil I was playing some Super Mario Run about a month ago and Mario Wonder has a much better look - at least from the trailer. Mario Run also only has like 4-5 different locations or themes to the levels.

Funbil I kinda forgot about the Direct and groggily tuned in at the end there - I thought it was Mario Run for a minute until the funky drug stuff started happening. But I also haven’t seen much of Mario Run, so it’s just an impression.

RubySunrise It certainly does carry similar aesthetics, but so do all the “new” 2D Mario games. I just hope there isn’t any waggle or controller shaking involved. That really turned me off of the U and Wii versions of NSMB.

What they have done to Super Mario RPG's art style is not only a crime against art but I think Akira Ueda and Kazuyuki Kurashima should personally be given fat settlements

Regarding the usual Japanese Direct exclusives:

The first one is from Good Feel, the former Ganbare Goemon team at Konami. And that game from the Sonic Mania team (not Sonic, the Yo-Yo girl Vs. Penguins one) looked sweet as well. A good day for platformers.

I never got past the sewers on the rented copy of smpreg I played as a kid but the remake looks lazy and pointlessly brand-consistent with mainline Mario games—the only differentiator being that Mario is squatter in this.

2501 Is the new DQM a remake or an original?

It’s a brand new episode, set in the world of Dragon Quest IV (you seem to play as a younger version of Pizarro, the main antagonist of that game).

It’s also called “Dragon Quest Monsters 3” in Japan, which is a slightly confusing title as we have had many more than three DQM games, including one subseries that already reached the “3” numbering.

Something about the Japanese Direct that I forgot to mention because it is neither a game nor it has a trailer: this July marks the 40th anniversary of the Family Computer and so there will be a special, “details to be determined” campaign related to the anniversary.
