2501 I don’t think it’s especially weird or elitist to admit you prefer old games;

the concern wasn’t that, it’s more recognizing that fact, as context for the way totk left us questioning if we even like video games any more. No, I am ironically very elitist. My video game opinions are correct, and the more old games I play, the more correct my opinions become, lol.

treefroggy I’ve definitely had periods where I question the amount of actual fun I get out of playing video games only to play or rediscover some older title and fall just as hard for it as I ever could have. Billion-hour open world AAA video games that contain every hit genre simultaneously are alright sometimes but they are not, in fact, the end-all of the medium.

I think it’s that some of these newer games are over-ingratiating whereas older games are more like objects you approach and interact with on your own terms. It’s not really the notion that it was better in the gold old days or anything. With a game like totk for example it’s this confluence of marketing, social media, the weight of 40 years of rehashing, 40 years of Corporation shit, 100 hours of easy-satiation gameplay, rather than say for example an old Quintet game which had then and retains now a sui generis quality

yeso Newer games are definitely fine-tuned for “user friendliness” and 100+ hours of Content via raw OCD-enervating psychological manipulation to a degree that older stuff was not. Someone I follow on Twitter the other day posted a thumbnail of some lauditory Video Essay going “HELP I literally CANNOT stop playing new Zelda, here are the secrets to its design” and asked why this is something gamers find commendable and that I think gets to the heart of a lot of it.

I’m enjoying TotK and I have played unforgivable amounts of Xenoblade so I don’t have any real leg to stand on here, but the clarity of design/artistry and graspable scope of older games developed by relatively small teams of people that weren’t overburdened with all these concessions to Content and User Friendly Design is definitely easier to appreciate and defend for me. Not to mention, relating to Quintet, a genuine artistic ambition and freedom to innovate that existed pretty much uniquely between the mid-90s and mid-00s, when tech capabilities were expanding exponentially by the year and ideas about what a game could and should do were not as firmly ingrained in publishers’ and consumers’ minds as they are now.

yeso This is a great way to put it. New games boast all the time about these immersive new worlds to explore, but they hew so closely to these frictionless design principles that bend over backwards to meet the player where they’re already comfortable, and they end up feeling very same-y.

Old games can be like traveling to a place where you don’t speak the local language and you have to struggle to figure out life there - strange and stressful but rewarding. New games sometimes feel like traveling to an all-inclusive resort that caters to your every preference - fun and relaxing but you don’t stretch yourself at all.

Do you guys think Illumination had any hand in influencing how that new 2D Mario is animated? The snappiness and the posing is so different from what Nintendo normally does on their own, not just for Mario but across any of their games. And you gotta admit, if Illumination is good at anything, it’s the snappiness and the posing.

Funbil I noticed this too. Without making a value judgement, it feels like Nintendo is entering a new era in which their franchises are expanding beyond games. This is happening with heavy handed, even Disney-like control. It’s leading to a franchise-wide homogeneity. I noticed the playable characters in Wonder are the exact same as the character wristbands that allow guests to interact with the park at Mario World at Universal Studios, for example.

I watched the trailer again had a thought about the art direction for the SMRPG remake, and, on some deeper emotional level, it kind of comes off like what a modern kid would think it should look like, based on seeing the original. I’m a little less cold on it now that I’ve just accepted that they didn’t do something way cooler… maybe I’m just getting wires crossed, though, because I really love that game a lot.

However my dumb ass noticed that they also Remastered Valentina’s wacky boob jiggle animation when she receives damage, you can’t even Gainax the bird lady boobs in SMRPG anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeso Every nintendo direct is just bad news: mario is teaming up with rabbids again, a new fire emblem where you fall through a dumb time portal so it’s somehow ok to give your sister a foot massage, a re-release of a good game except now made totally unviewable by some dog shit 2.5D tilt shift art style

they got the pervert fire emblem out of the way a few months ago, so I think I get credit for the hat trick

I liked the direct a lot. imho the best one this year so far.

I just can’t take any farming games anymore tho :P but sure people must love it.

Mother trilogy in a clay-esque art direction would be awesome.

I never got past the sewers on the rented copy of smpreg I played as a kid but the remake looks lazy and pointlessly brand-consistent with mainline Mario games—the only differentiator being that Mario is squatter in this.

Pikmin remaster and SMRPG remake are each price tagged at $59.99 US dollars. I’m sorry to say this in front of the children but Nintendo can eat my entire ass.

I’m usually something of a Nintendo defender because but it’s like at some point they ticked over and what used to feel tight and well tested etc to me now seems really try-hard. Maybe it’s the post-smb movie Nintendo problem or whatever?
