I know it’s not quite the distinctive toy-like aesthetic I adore of the original SMRPG, but I do think the remake still looks quite vibrant and lovely.

Pikmin 2 was a rental for me as a kid and even though this is overpriced, I can finally replay it without spending like $80 for just the disc.

The highlight announcement for me was easily the new Dragon Quest Monsters. I would have been sold at “new DQM but Switch” and poured 100+ hours into it but the fact that it’s a DQIV prequel where you play as Psaro and build your monster army is absolutely brilliant. I wish more JRPGs would let you play as the demon overlord final boss and a big reason why Dark Half on Super Famicom is a hidden gem is because it explores that.

Super Mario Wonder gives me the vibes of the Super Mario Land games in a good way and it looks delightful to me.

HeavenlyHalberd I will say the absolute worst shot/character model in the SMRPG remake is Peach, the one they lead in with; the rest of what’s shown doesn’t look quite as offensive, but still absolutely worse than the shadow-drenched diorama look of Ueda’s art of the surreal deformity of Kurashima’s character designs. (These guys did the art for Moon:RRPGA - they know what they’re doing!)

I am looking forward to Shimomura’s remastered soundtrack, and a little bit curious about the added battle mechanics indicated by the new UI.

Still though, I don’t really think it’s excusable that Mario Wonder has a more dynamic, cartoon-like visual style and fluid animations than a remake of one of the most aesthetically quirky and distinct Mario games of all time lol

Tradeghouls 'n ghosts The original game didn’t have any kind of “chain”, “boost” or “gauge” mechanic at all, so the only thing to conclude from this is that they are redesigning the battle system! Which I’m actually fine with, because combat in the original got way too formulaic way too fast given the simplicity of the battle system.

Just got home to watch the Nintendo Direct.

I love the look of Super Mario RPG! It was the first RPG I ever finished, back on the Wii Virtual Console. I’m excited to hear new renditions of Yoko Shimomura’s soundtrack!!!

Silent Hope looks appealing to me, I don’t know why. I think because they emphasized jumping between a base camp and the dungeon, and I like that sort of push and pull similar to the Persona games.

DQ Monsters looks cool! I still want to do a deep dive and get into Dragon Quest as a whole.

Penny’s Big Breakaway was a big surprise for me. I always like seeing more vibrant and joyful kinds of games. I will eventually get this, for sure.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is probably my most anticipated game for this holiday. I’m always up for a good 2D platformer, I look forward to good game feel and a big variety of levels.

In regards to the “do I even like video games anymore” conversation. I suspect I’m one of the younger people here (25) but I can understand what others are saying. As someone who has an interest in Video Games and makes an effort to play older games, I can observe the difference between games that were inspired by people’s real, lived experience versus games inspired by more games. I like how yeso put it, that classic games are more like an object you find and interact with whereas new games have a lot of baggage.

To paraphrase Story by Robert Mckee, he wrote something along the lines that to write a good movie script, you need knowledge of your audience and genre but should not write with your eye on the audience. It is difficult enough to create something new and original when all your attention is devoted to it, and that is even more difficult when you split it to game what other people will think and filter your vision there. It’s something the audience can feel, when a work is less than itself. Have knowledge of your audience to navigate their expectations, deliver on them in a fresh way or subvert them, but don’t write with them every step of the way. Most new games definitely carry the audience every step of the way, and are therefore less than themselves. That’s the perspective I have. Hopefully that makes sense.

that was good! mario RPG looks neat, pikmin all day, a non-NSMB 2D mario, finally a dragon quest monsters game. MGS even! although learning that none of the games are on the cart is kinda butt, even if i was just gonna get it on playstations anyway

i totally forgot about luigi’s mansion 2….that’s such a mixed bag for me

part 1 was shat on so hard at the gamecube’s launch for being short (which i loved, it was really replayable i thought), i swear i remember it being called a “tech demo” and the like, and they clearly took that to heart

so here comes dark moon for the 3DS! i was so hyped, but hoooo doggie does that game go on too long. worse yet, i recall the lack of checkpoints & some brutal bosses making me lose so much time in the process, i powered through but didn’t wanna play it again. maybe not being stuck with the 3DS’ controls will soften that? i love this series, but yeah, here’s to hoping for some tweaks

Funbil I noticed this too. Without making a value judgement, it feels like Nintendo is entering a new era in which their franchises are expanding beyond games. This is happening with heavy handed, even Disney-like control. It’s leading to a franchise-wide homogeneity. I noticed the playable characters in Wonder are the exact same as the character wristbands that allow guests to interact with the park at Mario World at Universal Studios, for example.

I watched both the JP and NA presentations and for me, this was the least exciting Nintendo Direct of my life, overall. Never been a fan of SMRPG, and everything else shown looked… fine.

But! Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks like a blast, and I wish I could play it right the heck now. Of course I’ll welcome it into my life come October, but boppin around in there during the summer months would be a good time.

They’ll drip-feed bits of information about the game at an agonizing rate, and I’ll look at all of it, and then by the time the game’s out, I’ll feel I’ve seen a good chunk of it already.

Imagine if they’d just surprise-released it after the Direct! So many fun surprises! OH WELL.

I was all ready to like penny’s big breakaway but the visual themeing combined with the music (especially the music) made me wonder who it’s for? It feels very kiddy and circus to me with that music, not that any kid born past 1990 has seen a circus

i think it looks great, it somehow looks both like sonic robo blast 2 and bubsy 3d, but obviously slickened up appropriately. though all i can say about who it’s for is, at least, me. i’m a freak though, and i neither know nor have an interest in what people like.

but i’m with you on the music. at least what they’re using in the trailer is very bland.

also, aesthetically, i love circus bullshit.

The Star Ocean 2 remake announcement strangely provoked a lot of nostalgia even though I can’t remember a damn thing about the game beyond the character designs and of course the sound test menu

One time at Cirque du Soleil when I was little one of the clowns came into the audience for props from people and I was so scared I hid under my seat.
