Just read through this whole thread, and wow there’s some great Japanese stuff that I need to listen to!
cera I listened to Caddywhompus A TON in high school, because Community Records was basically my dream record label. Ska, emo, hardcore, punk, they had it all! A Billion Ernies was one of my favorite bands.
tapevulture pg99 was another band that I listened to heavily in high school. My interests were basically ska, emo, and skramz (I’m sorry, it’s what we called it), so pg99 was kind of a proto-skramz band in our minds. They’re great and do really interesting stuff for the time. Jane Doe also came out in 2001, which is wild.
I’ve already talked about Panopticon in another thread, but it’s one of my top 5 bands of all time (and I think this fits into the rule of having to explain in great detail that Brandon mentioned above). Panopticon rules. I’m basically 100% a hardcore kid over metal, so metal has to be really good to get me interested. Black metal specifically is a hard ask: it usually sounds like it’s recorded at a practice space toilet, and there’s a metric ton of nazis in the scene! Panopticon rectifies both of those problems: the production is immaculate, and they’re an antifascist band.
I say “they,” but in reality Panopticon is a one-person black metal band by Austin Lunn. It’s antifascist bluegrass black metal. I don’t know what’s not to love! Maybe, if you listen to them, they’ll be a top 5 band for you as well!
