I watched parts 0, 1, 5, 6 and 7 so far and I enjoyed it.
I watched Part 6 while using my Miele vacuum on the original hardwood floors of my historically designated home (my ultimate “They don’t make ’em like they used to” purchase). All of which is to say, I found a lot with which to identify in that part of the video. I have major authenticity, find the best version brain about things I care about (I buy my eyeglasses from Shuron. Made in Greenville, SC and surprisingly affordable).
I think there’s a line between caring about this stuff and doing extreme conspicuous consumption. I think it can be hard to tell when you’ve crossed it and I don’t think there can be consensus as to when you cross it. Someone online once told my wife that living close enough to walk to work and NOT own a car is conspicuous consumption, so… capitalism absolutely shreds the meaning of these words when put through the lens of any single person’s experience. To my interpretation, Tim is playing with this line, never more clearly than when he’s doing the studio modeling of his jackets. The natural self-gratification of Having Nice Stuff is unavoidable. It’s no coincidence he has also has a bunch of glamor shots of his Mister, Digital N64 and modded Playstation, to me.
2501 The comparison to F for Fake is really apt and your comment has me planning a rewatch some time this week, so thank you for that. That said, comparing lengths is, I think, not entirely fair because
1) There was a lot to say about authenticity and marketing in 1973 but there’s A LOT more to say about it in 2021.
2) Film is expensive, video is cheap. If he were alive today, I can imagine Welles doing (to paraphrase Tim) a “PBS length documentary” about this stuff. My point I guess is they don’t have the same things limiting their lengths.
Part five, I was looking forward to because I just last month finished my first massive-modern-open-world game (AC: Odyssey) and I was interested in his opinions on the genre. The switch-a-roo was surprising but I got a kick out of it. A mid-video twist seemed appropriate for the structure. To the point that the “F for Fake” part of my brain is telling me maybe it was planned?
