I would like to say that I enjoyed this video for much the same reasons that I enjoyed F for Fake. Trickery and Fakery aren’t just topics in 2021, though. They’re our lives, especially in the US, and especially online. Everything is wrestling, everything is theater-Whether we want to engage with it or not. This is also why Perfect Blue gets better every year.
I suppose what I’m saying isn’t particularly original either but how could it be?

Also, as mentioned by goonbag earlier, I wonder if Tim could have made such a video on such a topic with such the experience that he had (the health issues, the YouTube issues, etc.) without the overly critical views showing up. Similar to the oft-quoted stories of American High School English teachers trying too hard to find meaning in a story written 100 years ago, perhaps all this discourse is the Cyberpunk reality that the game Cyberpunk 2077 is merely a product of (there would be something poetically ironic about a game about Cyberpunk Dystopias being ruined by similar corporate decision making that leads to such Cyberpunk Dystopias, if that observation could be valid here).

I haven’t really participated in this discussion though I have liked many of the comments, so I guess I feel like I need to say something. Regarding the bellyaching about money and expensive things, at least in the prologue for the review he verbally catalogues the latter in a way that reads like American Psycho but where we’re supposed to empathize with the character; I want to empathize with this character obviously but he will not stop talking about stuff, which I find shallow and obnoxious (and if that’s the point it’s a huge amount of that rhetoric to frontload the video with). Whatever the intended effect I recognized that this rhetorical technique wasn’t working for me, so I turned it off and decided I’d finish it later. I am assuming similar complaints above are in reaction to the presentation of these nice things and not to the fact that a person (whom we all like as far as we hordes of strangers are able) owns them.

That being said, I skipped to Story 5 and am having a good time.

I’m going to go on an enormous, surface-level tangent and state that as a Brit that’s long-endured crass, overbearing and personally intrusive American accents* across mainstream media, news and more contemporarily online video, Tim’s voice, even his fake YouTube voice, is deeply pleasant to listen to and is a real diamond in the rough.

*Yes I know that many British accents are comically abrasive, and I also am aware that there are many pleasant American accents too.

I mean this in the nicest way possible and no judgement but I don`t think it’s wise to configure a stranger’s “persona” and instead it may instead be better to focus on the material in the video/essay.

yeso You can’t really say the persona is irrelevant when it’s the intensely forefronted subject of half of these videos? I can’t comment on who X or Y celebrity really is, but I can comment on the persona they present to the public, and if the performance of that persona is the direct subject of their own art then it’s not exactly beside the point to assess it.

Anyway I agree we’re basically going around in circles at this point so I too am probably gonna check out of this discussion for a while

I got a great picture of what the game is, what it can do and what it wants to do with lots of good context and side stories and was very entertained along the way.

I have watched it all now, watching part 3 and then part 4 in the last few days.

I have also been trying to learn Unreal, first on my 8gb ram windows laptop where compliing code takes 5+ minutes, then on my also 8gb ram m1 mac mini where scripting is barely supported. Every time I open Unreal and it asks if I want to enable raytracing I think of that fancy gif-playing computer. I think “maybe I could build a computer that can play gifs”.

As I was watching parts 2 3 and 4 I started to think I began to realise I am unable Cyberpunk 2077. I have a base Playstation 4 I bought off my friend in 2016, a faulty Switch, and my aforementioned 8gb computers. I don’t think any of these could run the game anywhere close to how it’s meant to be. I was planning on buying the new playstation next year but it sounds like that probably won’t even run the game that well.

Maybe I’ll play it one day, we shall see.

beets I have Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS4, and I own a base console, also. I have not touched it since the week of the launch and I am uncertain as well if it is worth playing on the base PS4 - I have heard mixed comments based upon this question. If we really want to see the story, I think we can hobble through it, I am just uncertain how difficult that hobbling might be haha.

Those of you who’ve played it, how beefy is your rig? Wondering what kind of machine you (I) would need to play it with “medium graphics” at ~ 60fps

I have a GTX 1660 super and 16 gigs of ram. It plays well. The city however, does not look awesome like it does in Tim’s video. I can turn on raytracing though if I want to take a screenshot or something. I think it drops to like 6 fps.

Still working my way through the full video, but as I was part of the intital twitch stream I went the bookend route:

0, 1, 6, 7 and then into 2, 3, 4 (struggling through this one tbh as it’s sooooo gameplay heavy and I reaaaaallly don’t care heaps about this game itself). So I’ve only got 5 to watch which I’m glad I’ve left as a little treat after a bit of a slog content-wise.

Part 6 absolutely sums up everything I love about these videos. As a longtime massive fan of all the Japanese clothing brands Tim goes into, it was a real thrill to see him geek out about it and tie it into the season’s theme of authenticity. Also, the near-final frame of the section with him in the Mother 2 tourist jacket gave me actual goosebumps. It was really artfully delivered IMO.

Going to enjoy scrolling back through this forum and reading everyone’s nuanced discussion.

Also, I now gotta watch Strange Days!!!

the discussion about open world-ness is interesting and makes me wonder how interesting an open world actually is vs the kind of environment that permits wide movement but isn’t a huge sprawl. Something like Shenmue I guess. TW3 is a big open world, but that always felt at least to me like following mostly bounded forest trails, and it didn’t have the mowing the lawn ubisoft quality. I often find the suggestion of a world beyond a level environment more interesting than having to actually trudge through howevermany square miles of stuff

yeso Best sweet spot for me always has been the kind of spaces that some immersive sims like Hitman, Dishonored or Deus Ex offer. Big enough to feel like a sprawling space but at the same time more focused, tightly designed and consequentially, more interesting for my specific videogame tastes.

I have no recollection of this being mentioned in the video. If it’s anywhere, it’s probably mentioned somewhere in passing in section 3. The side quest with the crucifixion I think served as the general stand-in for the overall statement of “some of those side quests are great.”
