I prefer the remake, with emphasis on “I”: it is an enormous official ‘ROM hack’ that got the band back together after 16 years and Matsuno poured his soul out into it, and so I think it’s better suited for those who already love Tactics Ogre. I get why it would seem overwhelming and busy to a newcomer— in order to love it as I do with no familiarity, I think you’d have to be of a mind to play it slowly, deliberately, PSP by your bedside for an hour a night, for years. If it was your grandma’s first game she would never play anything else.
Thankfully, TO has three wholly separate game and story routes (I’m spoiling this as mention of how ambitious it was for ’95) and so you can play the original and still have more fresh TO waiting if you want more. The remake even expanded on the “Law” route and so is recommended there— though, the way that story goes, it’s shocking to think about it being in a SFC game . . .
In case anyone doesn’t know, Gideon Zhi a decade ago dropped the official English PSX script into the SFC ROM, it’s not great prose by any means but it works— and the English translation of the remake suffers from the same over-writing as War of the Lions so you’re compromising either way IMO.
