The stupidest time I ever died in a video game was so stupid I went to the trouble of uploading it to Youtube mere minutes ago in order to communicate the stupidity of it to you all
The first “real” (i.e. not overly tutorialized) mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 has you travel with your gang to an outpost to kill some dudes for reasons I forget. This, beginning from the checkpoint at which the mission technically starts, involves the following process:
1) lumber molasses-like across town through sludgy snowdrifts to get to a cabin, whereupon a cutscene is triggered (skippable)
2) after the cutscene, again trudge across town to join your crew and mount your horse
3) ride a ways to a lookout point above the encampment to watch a “cutscene” (unskippable?)
4) walk (trudge… slowly…) down the mountainside, approach encampment sneaking
5) wait until Dutch gives the signal to let loose and start shooting
6) after you’ve killed everyone, proceed until mission end checkpoint
I never made it to step 6. The first time I tried, I completed steps 1, 2, and 3, at which point the game crashed. Of course when I rebooted it I was not brought back to step 3, or to step 2, but to step 1. I tried again.
I made it to step 5, killing all but two of the guys at the outpost. I hid behind cover for a while waiting for them to come out, but they did not. Worrying that I would be waiting forever unless I took action, I took action: I exited cover, ran two feet, and was immediately shot in the head. Back to step 1.
For the third time I went through steps 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Again I killed most of the outpost guys, and again it seemed one or two were hiding. However, I felt reasonably sure of where they were, and so I climbed a water tower, suspecting I might spy them once on top. Here is what happened:
Back to step 1. I have not played the game since.
