the rocky connrrr picture show controversial take, and this is definitely not me defending nintendo’s legal practices, but it’s no wonder to me this was DMCA’d! This event was so sensationalized by the media… This is like full design docs for the game, and Nintendo could claim ownership to them and use these ideas whenever they want, a move they’ve done many times before. When people like linus complained it’s “a game they never even made”, they’re ignorant to the fact nintendo pulls 30 year old ideas for games in the modern age.
I’m no lawyer, maybe the NDA’s dried up, like one of the devs said the statute of limitations is expired, but this is a very complicated situation that has been oversimplified. it seems reasonably that Nintendo would have the right to pull this info whenever they want on multiple accounts. Nintendo is still a dirtbag company, but I just don’t see how this could be a shock. I think it’s more of a douche move to remove video game OSTs from youtube en masse like they did last year.
I’m here for free journalism, and, sure, blow that stuff up, it’s not going to hurt anybody’s bottom line, but the other side of the coin is it shouldn’t be such an outrage when this happens, it just seems like gamer entitlement to me. Put the video on piratebay so people can watch it anyway. The main reason I’d be sad for DYKG in this case, is it seems like they use their revenue for really good journalism recently. I remember when they started as annoying compilations of facts I already knew.
Like if the 64DD version of mother 3 was leaked, and it got DMCA’d, I wouldn’t be outraged, I’d just go download it anyway!
I’m also a firm believer that we could see many “impossible remakes” over the next 50 years. Like the Link’s Awakening remake, which was way more interesting than Square Enix’s 2.5D diorama remakes, we could see something like an earthbound claymation remake, 10, 20, or 30 years from now as a nostalgia piece. Anything is possible, companies lie, and no one is thinking long-term or big picture like that. 100 years from now, these games will be public domain, and our grandchildren could be playing a Castlevania VR remake made by the son of igarashi.
the most unreasonable version of this would be Nintendo claiming it steals market share or distracts from Tears of the Kingdom’s launch.
This could also have something to do with what’s going on at Retro Studios with the delay of Metroid Prime 4. We simply won’t know what’s going on, until we do. It’s a lot like politics, things can look one way, but we won’t know the true story for quite some time, sometimes 15-20 years later. AM2R was a bummer, but it’s still being updated through a loophole, lol. So I changed my mind pretty quickly when I realized pragmatically it doesn’t make too much of a difference.
I do think Nintendo takes the baby route too often when they sooner create a Mario x Rabbids TRPG, jrpg 20 times, over a Zelda one. Another example is Captain Toad Treasure tracker over the original Zelda prototype diorama idea. That’s really weird and annoying imho.
Like they didn’t make it, so now it automatically belongs to the public? No, that’s not how it works. You can pirate it with no consequence. that’s how it works. :p
