Listening to that mumblecore discussion… sometimes it’s ok to go “you know what, we don’t know anything about this. Let’s just move on” rather than try and dunk on something you don’t know anything about??? I found this such a turn off, and it bummed me out big style :(

@coreywilliams props for writing something thoughtful about the genre. Looking at wikipedia it turns out I’ve seen a lot of “mumblegore” but I’ve never actually heard it called that by actual people and some of the inclusions are a bit odd. I think I just thought of the work of Adam Wingard and Ti West as, like “mumblecore-adjacent horror” because of the shared actors/context.

Anyway, I liked Computer Chess a lot too.

aerisdead I think I would’ve moved on if I hadn’t read that incredibly offputting paragraph about the genre - I did have a looming negative impression of it already though. I’ll watch one of the things people have suggested as penance because I do agree it was a very “typical podcast” way to go ultimately. At least it’s a rare occurrence!

aerisdead I mentioned Computer Chess partially as it felt like the most Insert Credit-y of my faves. Beeswax is also a good Bujalski one that’s more standard mumblecore fare but isn’t entirely about sad guys and bad relationships.

The “horror” mumblecore stuff I agree that I think it’s mostly just a shared community of filmmakers that they have in common, not really the styles. Everyone should watch Creep though, I think.

Abandoning a game too early and having to live with the creeping, gnawing lack of closure, but also knowing that it’s too late to go back and complete it because you’ve totally forgotten all the controls and where the heck you were in the story and what the heck you were even supposed to be doing. I would argue that not finishing a course of antibiotics is more akin to starting a game, getting a trophy / achievement or two, quitting, and having the consequences linger on your trophy / achievement history for eternity.
