Yeah, disclaimer: my dander up because I was just last night ranting about a similar topic IRL. I’ve no illusions that I can control how other people spend their money: though I’m grateful if you consider my words— and I will certainly continue to spurn corporations that think they can exploit how I spend mine.

This is a single incident and long ago, but your story reminds me: some time late in the 360’s active years, DeathSmiles2 X abruptly became available for purchase on the American storefront. Microsoft never advertised or commented on this and there was talk online they might start selling untranslated Japanese digital downloads— but they never went on to do so and considering my experience I think it was just a strange mistake:
By coincidence, I learned about it almost immediately and, suspecting it might be a back-end error they would correct, purchased it within hours of release. However, then I got all kind of wacked-out errors trying to download and run it; presumably, conflicts between the legit signed license and the console’s region-lock protections. I called (English) Microsoft support and had a very funny and even ultimately pleasant time being shunted up and up the chain of command as, obviously, none of them had even heard of the game; at the end of which they were able to get it running and even offered to refund the cost for the hassle.

Good takes, both, and points I had not thought of.
