Well gosh, Brazilian developer Mark Venturelli pretended to give a talk on The Future Of Game Design, but then actually gave a talk on Why NFTs Are A Nightmare. At a Big 2022, a conference with some major Play-to-Earn[1] sponsors, who apparently tried to get the conference to stop the talk. Which the conference did not, because in fact they had already given Mark their blessing.
On one level, a great story of punking and Ls and bros getting owned. But the talk itself (watch it here, the auto-translate works fine, and see English slides here), is brilliant and thoughtful, interrogating the blockchain problem down to a philosophical “how does society work?” level, and touching on how important it is to the concept of any game (digital or physical) that they liberate the player from the constraints of real life… by having even tighter constraints of their own.
Probably many things that smart people in here have thought of already. I found it fascinating.
[1]: And wasn’t the to in Play-to-Earn always the giveaway? If earning becomes the purpose of play, it isn’t play.
