Project L the Riot produced fighting game will indeed be free to play which is no surprise at all, but nice to know. This game is looking fun even despite me not having any interest in League of Legends.

Also Tom Cannon is still a king.

I’ll remain skeptical about the now more conventional seeming character specific leveling system as opposed to the class leveling system until I can see details of how it works… that was one of the things about the PSP version that I thought was kind of cool. It was interesting to be able to sort of onboard units on to a class and have them be able to equip good gear straight away. Although, I might be Stockholm Syndroming some aspects of it that appeal to my own dark designs… I kind of like the process of babysitting units who are developing new classes.

There is a good amount of flab to trim off of the skill and system, though, even just off of its interface. And there are some slick looking interface improvements even just in that teaser. The equipment interface was a bit lacking too. But that’s also kind of in comparison to the rest of the interface which I thought was pretty good.

If any system needs to be brought to 2022 instead of staying stuck in 2010 I’d choose the clunky and unsatisfying crafting system though. Buying a whole stack of highly fungible Generic Ore or whatever to process down into specific kinds of ore, to process down into metal ingots, to process down into ingots of alloys… with some weapons taking multiple different kinds of metal ingots… which you couldn’t do via a batch process so you’re sitting there with a little fanfare and animation and new prompt each time… I genuinely think if I wasn’t playing on an emulator and didn’t have access to a fast forward button, I wouldn’t have wanted to bother with it.

New SE blog post about Harvestella. As a fan of the genre I like how this is looking. There’s a few oddities that I find absolutely delightful. Like…

I love it.

I also love what’s depicted of this city on the world map vs. what’s in the town.

I might really like this game! I think it completely depends on how pleasant/unpleasant I find the combat and dungeons, as well as the animations and sound effects for all the tasks. Life sims hinge so heavily on how satisfying those latter two are. Sounds and animations from GCN Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon still bring me joy just from thinking about them.

RubySunrise I’m definitely feeling optimistic about this one! We could use another one of these that is at least worth playing. A lot of the old guard in the genre is gone or not making good games anymore :/

but I do prefer stuff that looks lived in to this generation’s ultra-pristine areas full of names like Nemea, Istina, Shrika, Brakka, Asyl, etc.

Agreed! It sounds like from the description page that they are looking for seed money to get publishers to invest in them. I’m really not sure why they decided to combine it into one Kickstarter project, unless like Brandon said on Twitter one game is much further along in development than the other, or they think that one series would be way more popular and bring in a lot more money than another. It apparently looks like the rewards don’t stack so if you want both games, both artbooks, and your name on a gravestone, then you’ll be out a lot of money. I do hope this games will come out, and since they’re almost 50% funded at three hours in, I don’t think funding will be an issue.

Generally modern Square Enix stuff is extremely tame. It doesn’t look like there’s any kind of marriage options either. Maybe there will be some bad jokes in it though, always possible.

SNK have announced that they’re going to be making a new Fatal Fury / Garou game, which is genuinely astonishing.

Looking forward to waiting until it’s either available preowned or at a steep discount because SNK. :(

treefroggy That’s the F2P version, Super Bomberman R Online. If you “paid money for it” (unless you mean DLC cosmetics), it was most likely for the previous Bomberman game, Super Bomberman R, whose matching servers are still active and should appear as a separate game in your Steam library.

I know that Limited Run is a bit of a punching bag around here for various reasons but I appreciated their whole attitude.

I don’t care for acquiring plastic doodads so I don’t generally go for collector edition nonsense, but I was looking up the Axiom Verge strategy guides the other day and they are cool.

I’ve been playing Zelda 2 with a walkthrough and my kids love old strategy guides and maps and I feel like that’s the same vibe.

I do think LRGs does more good than harm to gaming on the whole and I hope they continue to do so after more consolidation.

antillese Read the rest of that thread on Twitter. They’ve acquired quite a bit, including Toaplan’s catalogue by the look of it, with the intent to publish to PC.

Good for consumers in the short to medium term but dang, this feels like the first step in consolidating certain kinds of beloved retro studios into something that feels grimy.

LeFish I find Embracer to be incredibly slimy, for all kinds of reasons, but in particular they seem to be the kind of big corp that obfuscates their involvement so that it still looks as though you’re buying your game from a small creator. I’m far from a fan of Limited Run Games (also for all kinds of reasons not worth getting into again), but I feel as though this is indeed a move to make all of the not great things about LRG even worse.
