yeso I didn’t grow up in an immigrant family, and I also haven’t encountered anyone in the US who doesn’t take their shoes off, other than in atypical situations (e.g. while moving). Maybe it’s something only a vocal minority do, who happen to be in charge of directing all movies and tv shows?
I remember as a kid I went to a (mostly-grownup) dinner party that my friend’s parents were hosting, and the dad very apologetically asked people as they came in to take their shoes off, as though it were a bizarre request that only he was making. That was the first time that I started to wonder if taking your shoes off was not the norm. but since then every gathering I’ve gone to everyone took their shoes off voluntarily without being asked. “People who don’t take their shoes off” feels like this mythic creature that everyone likes to attack (usually in jest of course), but which I personally haven’t seen (though I’m sure there are people who don’t do it). I think lots of people don’t really find shoes super comfortable and want to take them off as soon as they get home, like loosening the tie after leaving the office.
