The music of FFX fits the game so well. It’s how contextual it is within the game that makes this soundtrack so beautiful.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve never played anything on a PC88/98, yet I listen to random soundtracks all the time.

I can’t decide between one Mega Man soundtrack of these four, so I’ve given up for now. Usually I listen to Mega Man 3 when I want to listen to Mega Man, so maybe that’s the one.

Clearly it’s Dejected Groose Theme. I forgot how incredible the Skyward Sword soundtrack is. Trombone as Groose’s thematic instrument is perfect. Some of these tracks do such a great job of musical storytelling.

I toiled enough over including Gravity Rush that I’ve bumped it up in my to-play queue—it’s been long enough that I’ll just start over, and finish it this time! Which arrangement is the one you usally listen to? I thought the one I’d been using lately didn’t have any GR2 in it, but I was wrong…

antillese I think it’s been obviated by time because the samples don’t sound good even compared to its contemporaries.

(i am not arguing with you, however) I think this is an interesting reason to advocate for the Tactics OST over VII—to my ear the Tactics samples in general fall farther into the uncanny valley situation where it actually is more difficult for me to listen to (relatively speaking) because it’s closer to how real instruments are supposed to sound, while VII’s primitive strings and horns sound fake enough that they fit into the box my brain classifies as whole-cloth made-up synthesizer sounds. I really like the bell/vibraphone sounds specifically. Absolutely too much flute, though.

captain your comments on VII are a much more well-articulated way of saying what i would have said, which is FFVII music sounds like FFVII music, which is its own genre, built from its own suite of custom-made sounds. while the graphics have aged poorly, the soundscape from that game sounds like a crystal from a time that is both far in the past and far in the future.

looks like it’s “Vinphonic’s OST Edit”. From the readme:

This is Tanaka rocking the house with much thematic interplay, pure orchestra on and off, with a beautiful fusion of synth and orchestra only Tanaka can pull off and with truly spectacular moments from smashing guitar solos to dramatic operatic soprano. But the representation on the soundtrack albums was sorely lacking, with unecessary loops and fadeouts that detract from (my) enjoyment.

So I proudly present you a proper representation of the two scores sadly butchered on the soundtracks. I did what I could to match it as closely to the real recording session as possible, so this time there is not a single pointless loop left and the few pieces that do still loop do so naturally (meaning each version only ONCE and then a proper finish). I’ve also rearranged all pieces for a more organic narrative and combined many pieces from the two soundtracks together that work in context. Now you can listen to almost three hours of glorious music back to back without getting an epileptic seizure or anticipating the dreadful fadeout. And I did it all free of charge.

RubySunrise it shows in that there’s SO much music (351 tracks in the album I have), and so many of those tracks are dynamic or variations. How Fi’s theme evolves is a narrative all its own.

whatsarobot xhekros Fang’s Theme, though (and that whole sequence it plays to is surpiringly thrilling). I need to get back to that game after SOPFFO. Something finally convinced me to play the whole trilogy, and I didn’t expect that to happen.

There are only 15 16 responses so far, and the way that the Form spits the result out on to a spreadsheet means that I can’t really do even cursory analytics with much precision, because until I can finalize it, it only shows collated data on each individual question… so I’ve got 15 16 entries on 10 separate instances of the same question instead of ~~150~~ 160 entries on the same question.

However, I can definitely say that we won’t be ending up with a list comprised entirely of Honor Roll (helpfully, two participants chose the same game on the same question, so it was easy to see even without the data having been collated in any way), and, hoo boy, there are some trends that are so noticeably present that they can’t be missed!

not for nothing i just want to mention Blinded by Light from the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack. i don’t think we’ll see much love for that OST in its entirety, but that one song towers above whatever horizon you currently have your back toward, and slyly evades direct eye contact.

whatsarobot I was thinking about putting XIII in my list, and yeah, Blinded by Light is one of the best tracks. And talking about XIII, Worlds Collide is another track on XIII-2 I liked. But yeah, XIII rocks and has a lot of really good tracks. Hamauzu did a nice job.

I haven’t played this game since around the time it came out, and I forgot how cool some of this music is. Fi’s theme is so ephemeral, and I loved the trombone for Groose, especially as a budding score appreciator. I ended up getting the game version that came with the CD of eight live orchestra arrangements, which was cool. Unfortunate the only song from SS was The Ballad of the Goddess, which i think is pretty mid.

I feel like whether or not someone loves the Banjo Kazooie soundtrack is some kind of personality test that determines their ultimate musical path in life. As a kid my brother loved it and I was… confused by it. We now both listen to lots of music that could be described as “weird sounds,” though the weird sounds we listen to are very different.

I keep on wondering whether my disdain towards Banjo Kazooie is real, or just some weird rebellion towards my older brother, since it was his absolute favorite game. Maybe I should play it again.
