Finally, a totally random guess of mine pays off. This time, I’ll be presenting my entry in GIF form. (Note that the frame rate isn’t as choppy as depicted here. I just couldn’t record a version that didn’t end up choppy.)

Hmm Video Game King ‘s GIF on this page does not display properly on my phone so here is a direct link for people who have the same issue.

The standard font at the end screams PS1 to me, although I could see it be a Pippin game instead, in the spirit of this thread. Is it something like Tarot Mystery for the Pippin? I can only find the cover…

exodus you are probably thinking of games such as Takuramakan or Jewels of the Oracle which have a similar vibe but, as you mentioned, some video rendering details and the basic font used don’t really match the Saturn.

[edit] Got it! It’s Tarot Uranai for the 3DO. Wow what a weird pick haha, yours are always fun to figure out. I was not that far off the first time.

3DO really flexing with video compression here. Does this game use the MPEG decoder?

So this here, is it an FMV game as it appears, or no? interesting smt vibes here. I can tell it’s not a saturn game because the compression is too good for the era when saturn was still doing these, so I am leaning toward PC.

My first thought was, “I bet this is a Japanese 3DO game”

… but I haven’t had a chance to dig into what that library even looks like. I’m spending that precious research time making goofy replies instead. 😅

Yeah, it had that upper end of 3DO vibe, but somehow despite watching multiple “all games for X console” videos including 3DO, I had never noticed this one! I also got stuck on saturn because of the psychedelic tarot game they’ve got there, even though I knew for 10000% certain that wasn’t it.

This is very familiar!! my first instinct was “an SMT spinoff with a lower budget, but not THAT much lower,” but I can’t find anything to support that. I was gonna guess Shin Megami Tensei Nine but that’s the wrong vibe and the wrong platform. I get the feeling I own this game.

I know it’s not disaster report, but it’s definitely in that sphere budget-wise. There aren’t that many games with this specific level of detail/quality.

exodus I started poking around late (2001-ish) Dreamcast games first, but then yeah. I went almost the same exact course you did with the PS2 hint.

But then, every Tocho hint automatically sends me to studying SMT screenshots first. 😅

Right, it definitely looks like a 2001-2002 title, but looks can be deceiving… Here is another hint: it is neither a particularly beloved game or missing gem, but it is probably much better known and noteworthy for the story surrounding its development than the game itself.

Ah, I was figuring it on a later title anyway, even before your hint. I feel like the texture quality and the number of polys in the face gives that later feel but from a team that maybe isn’t as accomplished as the big guns.

I just want to make sure - was this released on the PS2? Want to make sure it’s not a PS2-origin game that was abandoned and then finally released on a newer platform.
