What's that (obscure!) game!?

It doesn’t look like any of the stgs on the system that I know of, UI doesn’t match Zero Gunner 2 or Cannon Spike for example, and the ratio is wrong for Gunbird 2 or Psyvariar 2. Is it a shooting game at all, or is this screenshot not indicative of normal gameplay?

LOL! You’ve kinda hint-guessed most of the Dreamcast shmup library (I’m exaggerating/teasing 😆 )

I didn’t realize at first this was a mini-game, but a shmup that starts off with you having to navigate an arcade … which I think would be amazing. :)

sosadillatron there aren’t many of them which is why I figured it must be a trick. They’re pretty much all good to great though, that last gasp of the genre when people were trying out neat ideas like Psyvariar’s grazing stuff or Zero Gunner 2’s wonky control scheme, and obviously Ikaruga trying to differentiate themselves.

lol - was thinking “that sure looks like it could be a TG16 Hudson shmup with the behind fire”, and what do you know, it’s a Hudson game. Looking through examples reminded me that I need to play Under Defeat.

Mars Matrix is actually my favorite shmup, and I’ve been known to go on rants … RANTS I TELL YOU … about how it is criminally underrated and ignored. Especially the original 1-button control scheme. I like Ikaruga, but it drive me mad to see it get yet another new release on a new platform, and Mars Matrix sits there expensive and unattainable for most.

sosadillatron didn’t it get a pc port at some point? I have vague memories of that. Don’t know how good the port would be anyway but seems easier than emulating NAOMI hardware.

I haven’t heard or seen an official PC release (if it exists, now I wanna find it!). I only know of the CPS2 and Dreamcast versions (I have the CPS2 version, and it’s a short story involving my girlfriend at the time getting the board for me as a gift. She’s now my wife. :P ).

I’m sorry. My uncanny mutant curse of turning threads into Mars Matrix discussions are going out of control! Was the answer Kita e White Illumination? 😅

Well, it is indeed kita he white illumination! I knew any dreamcast game would be too easy, but it seemed like the time for it… and the trick almost made it easier. OH WELL! bring on the new prompt!
