so, i’ve been wondering for a while (and sorry if i’ve already asked somewhere else!), but what is the best final fantasy game to start with (preferably available on switch or easily emulated…)? or, should i just jump into ys viii first (because i heard people say it was good and it was on sale so i bought it)?

you have to decide if you want pre or post FFVII. If pre, I’d say VI, and if post I’d say VII. I don’t personally think they’re the “best” but they’re very good and immediately engaging

NoJoTo I generally agree with what yeso said, with the caveat that if you find the premise of one of the other games particularly enticing, you should go with that instead. Other than maybe FF2, none of them are bad – but they all have very different worlds (particularly from the playstation era onwards), some perhaps more appealing to you than others. You might have heard mechanical critiques of certain entries in the series, but I think you can mostly ignore those if you’re not already a massive RPG fanatic. Though yeah, if after reading the intros to the wikipedia articles and glancing at screenshots for each game you aren’t drawn to any particular entry, I’d just go with what The-Forum-Poster-Formerly-Known-As-Yeso said and play 6 or 7.

I think the best answer for a 2D game to start on is FF6 in the snes rom form. The pixel remaster is pretty ok if you want it in wide screen but be sure you play it on PC if you care about fonts (so you can replace them).
Why ff6 tho? Because it has the most stuff going on and is the most likely to please. Its a good intro because if you fall in love with the game’s core the other Final Fantasy games will prolly be more hook-y despite aspects you dont enjoy as much. Where as if you bounce off before trying 6 I feel like you missed out on the big one.

FF5 and FF6 (snes versions) allow 2 player co-op in battle which I think is just neat.

I don’t thing 3D final fantasy ever got better than FF7. But ff7 is so weird and “important” this isnt even a final fantasy rec. The materia system is really fun and all the minigames are a blast. This feel like the last time a finalfantasy was this rich with ideas and content. (until 14 which is an MMO) The later entries feel sort of paired down to be more tight around central themes. and probably less expensive to make while being self serious and pretty. I’m in the camp that thinks the remake is bad AND incomprehensible if you didnt play the original first.

These are all stand along games and getting in deep with nearly any of them will give you the trope and lore back ground you need to “get” final fantasy.

ok, so, i actually tried final fantasy 6 for a bit, and i got into it, but then my entire party died and i couldn’t figure out how to load my save… like, i walked through a couple blue circle-orb-things, and i even googled how to load a save and read some forum post where a person answered their own question, but….
basically, should i try again and make a savestate at every blue circle-orb-thing or is saving/loading a thing you unlock later or am i clueless and loading a save is very obvious?

I think the first RPG I finished on my own was Golden Sun on gba, but my first played would probably be Dragon Warrior 3 on Gameboy color. I didn’t get too far in it and didn’t much enjoy it as a young’n.

i suppose it kind of goes without saying, since i’m always kicking around here, but evertime i listen to an episode of insert credit, at the end of it i think, “that was nice.”

I honestly thought that Jaffe was going to give this episode to Frank for being such a trooper and not dipping out early. Also, his answer of “Whoever hits the hardest” to the party member question was the best, or at least the most honest.

Respect to Frank, he didn’t jump in on topics he didn’t have anything to add to, but hit hard when it counted.

watch out for some of those youtube boot guys, the advice isnt always sound. One of the main ones recommended wearing clarks desert boots with shorts

I’m not an expert but a couple years ago made a concerted effort to buy a lifetime pair and I can endorse

Redwing classic mocs (recommend the moc toe since the cap toes wrinkle over time)

Danner mountain lights - these are great and perfect for the 9 months of winter and pseudo-winter in chicago (just takes a bit of care to keep the steel parts dry and rust free). Danner also has a great solid warranty and return policy

I’d stay away from clarks because while they’re quite comfortable and look good, they fall apart at like a sneaker rate in my experience

my most recent pair of desert treks are holding up a lot better. they say made in vietnam and in my memory the last pair weren’t, maybe MIC? i’ll probably try something like yogi or red wing chukkas when these do fall apart but NEVER with shorts. that’s what trainers are for.

I have a pair of the red wing chukkas - they’re good and hold up well other than the creases. They’re a bit more on the formal side so I wear mine at work. I’m on my feet much of the day and they’re always comfortable.

My only contribution to the boot discussion is that I had a pair of clarks desert boots where within a year of regular use the soles had worn down to a glasslike negative friction surface that caused my feet to fly out in front of me and mw me to fall on my ass with the presence of any moisture whatsoever on the ground

I think the first RPG I played is probably Pokemon Blue, but after that, all these RPGs on the GBA: Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. I was alive and playing games when the SNES was queen, but my family didn’t have one. It was those GBA games that made me go back and play Final Fantasy IV and VI, and eventually the rest of the pre VII lot. I had a ripped copy of the PC version of Final Fantasy VII but the second disc didn’t work. I played through the first disc 3 or 4 times. That was well after the game’s initial release - I must’ve been in high school by then.

My point though is Golden Sun is the RPG that really opened up my mind to what a RPG could be and more or less remains my internal standard-bearer for “classic style RPGs” - whatever that means.

My first JRPG experience was FFVIII, and it was the game that made me buy a PlayStation. I didn’t regret it, there is some real heavy trippy weird shit at some parts that is still enjoyable, and I feel the game gets shat on things it didn’t deserve. It’s a shame the link system is soooo easy to exploit (the easiest FF at that, sadly).

yeso i used to own these exact shoes but would never have dreamed of pairing them with shorts.

(i bought Clarks desert boots because around the year 2000, i was very infatuated with Ghostface Killah’s insistence on Clarks wallabees, and wanted a pair of my own, but thought they looked very goofy (i still think this (even when worn with elaborate robes and/or a giant eagle wrist ornament)), so the desert boots were my own personal compromise).

Cf. (not pictured: Clarks wallabees, but i’d bet money Ghost was either wearing wallies when this photo was taken, or he at least considered wearing them that day)

anyway, having good shoes absolutely rules, but wearing leather is problematic!

still in the sneaker zone, but the New Balance 996s i’m wearing right now are so comfortable, i wish they would last the rest of my life.
