vlct Your reaction may have been misplaced, but I don’t think your reaction was totally unreasonable!
I am a native English speaker, but nevertheless, I still had to read @antillese’s comment once or twice to feel sure enough to intervene. I didn’t want to say this in my earlier comment so as to not come off as biased and cliquish, but I hang out here enough to know such a hostile comment would be completely uncharacteristic of them, if not pretty much anyone here. I don’t know how much you lurk, but I post enough to know you’re not a super active poster, so I thought it was fair to assume you wouldn’t have that level of familiarity.
It’s also true that the sort of hostile attitude that you perceived being directed at you is all too common on the internet, so I don’t blame you for reacting defensively. I like the forums here because they are a refuge from that sort of thing, but, well, lots of places say they’re like that, even when they’re only like that selectively. It’s rarer to find a community that actually puts in the collective work to make respectful communication something everyone can expect, and not just the regulars.
In fact, when you think about it, it’s actually better that you expressed how you felt, even if it was initially defensively. If you hadn’t vocally alluded to feeling targeted, no one would know there was anything that needed to be resolved. You’d potentially just feel crummy or unwelcome for what in truth was a total misunderstanding. So, instead I’ll thank you for expressing how you felt clearly, so it was easy to help!
