late to the discussion because I save the podcast for later in the week
I grew up in a dysfunctional family where video games were among our escapes, so we had trouble controlling our screen time—like any kid might, getting screamed at and threatened with bodily harm just about every day, who wants to turn the console off and return to that?—but my parents never put that together and only saw them as evil distractions. Although my father never made an effective effort to halt games entering the house, he did make us feel like shit for playing them.
He finally made it explicitly clear, while I was in college studying animation, that he wished I’d grow out of playing video games. I don’t know what he thought I wanted to do with my portfolio had I graduated, because he also looked down on me for watching cartoons (when I started getting into anime, he and my older brother bullied me about it until I cried). I think he wanted me to work in advertising, or making shorts for the national film board?
Anyway my mom told me the other day that a colleague and friend of his at the university where he teaches is a game developer and that they got high together. Hearing that made me so upset.
That Josué Yrion guy’s pokérap sure is awkward.
