Goichi Suda is the first person that came to mind. Hideki Kamiya, maybe? It doesn’t truly fit. Luhrmann has basically made one type of movie, to varying degrees of success, and that’s not exactly true of Suda or Kamiya projects. I’m thinking mainly of DMC and Lollipop Chainsaw in this comparison.
I don’t hate Luhrmann, but I don’t find him particularly exciting either. I thought The Great Gatsby was boring, while Romeo + Juliet is a personal iconic queer movie. Moulin Rouge is bottled theater kid energy, take that as you will.
