Without saying something that would appear on a dozen Mega Drive compilations, I think the game that I’ve bought the most number of times might be Ikaruga. I bought the GameCube version, and held onto it until a few years ago when I was trimming my collection, and I also have the 360, PC, and Switch ports. I know I’ve also bought various versions of Street Fighter 2 many times, but whether I could say I’ve bought any one version more than I’ve bought Ikaruga is something else; I could say the same for various KoF games too.

exodus I think the Hottest Tip is that you have a pretty generous window of invulnerability after a head bonk, (which you can abuse to dodge boss attacks if you’re clever) and when Kaiser Greedy is shooting lightning at you in the last boss just walk left. It took me many, many losses to internalize how to dodge that move.

maybe my most-purchased game is Link’s Awakening. gb, gbc, vc on 3ds, the game & watch they did recently, and then the remake on switch.

i usually don’t buy multiple copies of games. i think the only real exception is tales of symphonia - i preordered it ahead of release day back in 2004, traded that copy in for something else (my parents forbade me from having more than one t-rated game at the time, so i had to trade them in and out), and then bought a used copy on ebay a decade later.

been thinking of getting another one because that ebay copy barely works and taking out the disc every few seconds is… not conducive to a good time!

leah well that is an interesting method - was the idea that only one teen game at a time would reduce their influence on you… Or something?? I’m not really seeing what they were going for.

love games with default run push to walk, agree that walk button = rp button, or immersion button. very important to me. though since I’m so into walking for immersion, it doesnt matter as much to push for run.

might get in that VHF patreon and get in the discord to drop some truth, but frankly forums is the only format I’m comfortable with. (frank pun intended)

exodus in retrospect it was some combination of not really understanding video games - so everything probably looked like it was one degree away from grand theft auto, which was definitely verboten - and the fact that they gifted super smash bros melee to me and my sister without realizing that it was t-rated so technically inappropriate for us youngsters, so they were trying to reestablish authority… i think. they were also trying to discourage me from playing video games which, uh, didn’t work

leah yeah that tends to have the opposite effect. And wow, smash bros was teen? I think standards have slid a bit since then.

leah My mother asked me about two weeks ago whether I played “any of those violent games”. I think she’d seen a piece on the news about some chumpo who’d played [insert a gratuitously violent series] and had committed [insert an awful crime]. I’m 35.

When I was in university she came to visit me one day and saw my collection of around 50-60 GameCube and PS2 games and asked how I managed to find the the time to play them followed by the relief that “at least you’re not on the street dealing drugs”, as if those were my only options. I love my mother to the ends of the earth but her ignorance and moral panic surrounding videogames sure does make me roll my eyes hard.

leah my parents were also kinda weird about this, they didn’t let me buy M-rated games but they were okay with me playing them at other kids houses.

My only limitation with T rated games was that after my dad realized that first person shooters could sometimes be rated T he didn’t let us kids buy any more of those “war and guns games”.

I think that kind of made my taste in video games more interesting though, because anything mainstream on the early Xbox 360 days was rated M so I had to dig into the weird t rated stuff .

My mom used to be on the violent video game thing but also, the person she knows best who plays games is me, and after 41 years I think she’s figured out I’m not violent. Plus she knows it’s the gun laws and such. But it did take her until about three or four years ago to stop mentioning it!

Goichi Suda is the first person that came to mind. Hideki Kamiya, maybe? It doesn’t truly fit. Luhrmann has basically made one type of movie, to varying degrees of success, and that’s not exactly true of Suda or Kamiya projects. I’m thinking mainly of DMC and Lollipop Chainsaw in this comparison.

I don’t hate Luhrmann, but I don’t find him particularly exciting either. I thought The Great Gatsby was boring, while Romeo + Juliet is a personal iconic queer movie. Moulin Rouge is bottled theater kid energy, take that as you will.

Inveterate age-rounder reporting in. I’m 42 and I’ll be 42 until probably fall when I’ll tell you I’m 43. My birthday is in January.

Push to Run is in FFVII. I had a “Dual-Shock™ Analog Controller for PlayStation” when I played FFVIII. This was cool because you didn’t have to hold X to run because you could use the analog stick. There was some bridge in the last dungeon that was creaky and I found out after it crashed beneath me that you can only get that treasure chest or whatever it is if you walk over it. Oh well. I absolutely wanted to be just done with that game.
