in high school me and some friends did a silly queer short film that was supposed to be about a gang of pachucos clashing with a gang of cholos. it had barely any plot but everyone liked it because it was very stylish.

So I’m going to get Pokemon Violet. I like the spaceship looking legendary and the apparently futurist aesthetic, and besides violet is one of my top three colors. If anyone is planning on getting Scarlet you can count on me to trade you the version

So those reviews are coming in and it looks like they might be a very good couple of games held back by egregious performance issues. I’ve got a copy of Scarlet set aside at my local game shop and I will still be picking it up.

I didn’t play Arceus so I don’t totally know what to expect.

I did a digital pre-order so I’m in either way! I watched about an hour on Twitch just now, and the stuttering and textures do seem quite bad (although it’s hard to tell just how bad over a stream). Other aspects of the game seem neat, though. I’m excited and have trepidation.

The frame rate is legitimately awful. It’s actually shocking. There’s major and obvious slow down in like… a chill classroom setting with children sitting down and text boxes popping up. Wild.

I watched someone play this for two hours last night and I was iffy on saying it as a driveby critique because I just don’t care about Pokemon that much, but yeah, it’s strange how bad this looks. Apart from being widescreen this would have been merely an average Wii game.

Anyway, wow, they sure do give you a more robust character creator than any of the previous games did.

Yeah, I tend to be rather uncaring about performance issues in general. Only recently I’ve finally come around on the idea that technical performance does in fact play a big role in player experience (I was seriously wrong for many years. Console fandom junk twists the mind). The issues S/V are having are distracting to the point of disappointment. I’m having a fun time so far, but it’s hard to imagine I’ll want to spend a ton more time hanging out in this world. My main interest in Pokemon comes from their “hang outness” and competitive, and how those two things work together. I hang out in the world and chip away at constructing a competitive team, and then get to go try out my strategy. I’ve spent all this time with my mons hanging out that I feel more invested than I do when I go play around in Showdown. I hope these issues manifest in a less distracting way in competitive. Is it even possible to iron these issues out thru patches?

According to this tweet there may be a memory leak that builds every time you enter a city until the game crashes (and the only solution to that currently is to relaunch the game).

Iwata-San would have single-handedly reprogrammed the entire game in assembly and added a new region by now.
