I’m really sore when people say the first game had no dungeons besides the beasts and shrines and usually completely erase the fact that Hyrule Castle was one of the coolest dungeons of all time, very similar to what elden ring would do.

Yes!! This is fair! Instead of feeling like a puzzle box, it was just a place with lots of cool environmental storytelling in store and a theme that transitioned from horns to organ and back. I’m always trying to place what that trumpet reminds me—spaghetti westerns? Zorro? The framerate is at its worst in that area though and it is only one very cool dungeon. If there be dungeons in the next game besides shrines then weave them into the landscape like they did with Hyrule castle, I say.

Hmm now that we’re seeing biomes other than just yellow sky stuff, I’m more interested then I was before. The snowy viking ship and the lava area could be interesting, but the orb of water in the sky and holes in the desert don’t do much for me. The platforming in the sky looks like a nightmare to me.

Have they confirmed shrines are coming back? I liked those little physics puzzles. More in-depth dungeons would be good too.

Every time I see the crafting stuff, my eyes glaze over. I dislike most crafting systems in games and even though this one seems pretty deeply fleshed out, I still think it’s going to be a pain in the butt like cooking was in BotW 1.

But I think I might be contractually obligated to buy this game now:

not exactly certain what you’re referring to, the main chorus of the castle theme– which I think is french horns but could be wrong– does remind me of The Ballad of the Wind Fish, having a similar melody, but overall it’s a deconstruction of previous Ganon’s Tower themes and probably has some Hyrule Castle thrown in there, I haven’t revisited the castle yet on my first playthrough in three years but I spent so much time in that castle the song is mostly seared in my memory.

I super don’t care to dissect or watch many dissections of the trailer, now is the media-mania where it’s basically spoilers and youtubers just trying to get a check. Nintendo did well not to release this trailer until a week before release because it gives everyone more of a chance to set the media hype aside and just enjoy the damn game for once.

BTW The yellow tear shaped stone zelda has is some more ancient jomon japanese stuff– that teardrop shape is like a national treasure or something.

I don’t like the shot with the horse-drawn cart that is held together with link’s new spirit glue– just make a stage coach out of wood and stop being a lazy consumerist boomer who holds a stage coach together with superglue. pretty sure the people of this harsh world can build a dang stage coach and don’t need link to use ghost **** to do it for them.

I watched that incredibly dorky webseries when I was still a teenager (I knew it was incredibly dorky at the time, but still enjoyed it) so the fact that they got this guy to play Ganondorf for real is pretty funny. Unfortunately I don’t really think his voice fits the character at all!

same; shadow of the colossus set me up to not enjoy twilight princess at all, I was pretty done, but with Iwata’s tragic passing I felt like Breath of the Wild was done in his tribute, so I was a believer.
My emotional response to this trailer was from exactly this:

y’all already know I am emotions-centric when it comes to this stuff.

I think that the theme and tone of the trailer is meant to make general audience feel tripped out by the music’s tempo change, giving a sense that what we are familiar with from before is being turned upside down. The previous game was a deconstruction and relatively calm setting that decayed over one hundred years or whatever, and now the action is rising and things are unraveling and intensifying in this sequel.

I held off from saying this earlier in the “should I buy a switch thread” but I definitely do not think that Nintendo’s next console will have 4k capability at all. The numbers just don’t line up, and remember how long it was before they switched to HD video.

also used in Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess a bunch so that’s a fair guess– if it was meant to echo the zourna in those games that would make a lot of sense, and a lot more appropriate in medieval context– but I think that’s just why they may have used a saxophone: to show that we’re in the future now and there’s high technology happening.

I once got in an uber with a driver from kurdistan who was playing turkish zourna dance club pop music very quietly and I had him crank that shit to the max as we blasted it driving through venice with the windows down on a friday night. He did not speak english well at all and was very stoked that someone was into his music and knew Zurna by name. And yes, I only know it because of Nintendo music. I even found a zurna plugin for fruityloops 8 back in the day and used it to make zurna chiptune covers back in 2008 lol.

I feel like I must have the wrong brain worms because saxophone aside, I felt like that was kind of a bad weird trailer? Just a bunch of stuff slapped together with no particular arc, and which didn’t tell a casual very much about anything? But everyone seems to love it so I reckon I’m the one who’s wrong here! Just seemed to miss that nintendo polish where you come out of it knowing more than you did before, or having some solid sense of the story, or some sense of place, or etc. Just felt like a big montage of stuff!? am I way out there on this one?

(also this is not a critique of the game, I’m ready for it and botw was my favorite zelda that I’ve ever touched, to where I’m not sure there’s even a point in me giving the n64 ones a serious go)

exodus I do not like Ocarina of Time - I have a hard time with 64 games in general. They way textures are handled on that system is off putting to me. The only Zelda games I dig are Link’s Awakening, A Link Between Worlds and BotW. The NES games are interesting but not something I want to spend a lot of time with. A Link to the Past is ok.

This latest Tears of the Kingdom trailer is the first I’ve seen and I think the game looks great. I went from not excited to quite excited. I like having a montage of stuff without much of a thread. It did make me wish that Nintendo would put as much effort into Metroid as they do Zelda though.

exodus I wouldn’t say you’re wrong for feeling unimpressed by that trailer. I think it was designed to show off a string of things that address some common criticisms of botw. Maybe that’s why it feels disconnected?

exodus No you’re not alone, I think I was also oversold on the trailer by people’s reactions and when I actually watched it I had basically the same response as you did. Then again I was not super excited by BotW at any point during its hype cycle (Zelda had burned through most of my childhood goodwill by the mid 2010s) and only after actually playing it did I come to appreciate what the big deal was. So I’m guessing once again if you’re not a person invested in the Lore and thrilled just by seeing familiar characters on the screen it might be a game that just doesn’t read visually, you just need to actually play it.

Like the major focal points of the trailers for both this and BotW have been the story, the landmasses, and the “here are the things you can fool around with in this game if you want” sandbox elements. The first of these I’m indifferent to (or rather, I thought it was one of BotW’s weak points so I’m not expecting much) and the latter two are only impressive to me once you really have a sense of how they’re incorporated positionally and structurally into the game, which is really difficult to get a sense for in 3-4 minute teasers.

Karasu I’ve heard people talk about BotW fatigue and while I played it later than most and don’t look back on it and get instantly nostalgic like I do for some games (even relatively recent ones), I would be curious to try it again in hard mode… once Nintendo puts out a 4K 60fps patch, which will inevitably happen at whatever time they decide to actually advance the Switch hardware lol

I was ever slightly more interested in TotK after this new trailer, but not enough to get excited or anything. I’ll inevitably play it, I just won’t know if I’m very interested until reviews start getting posted. I know I was harsh about the Nintendo Direct a few weeks back, but it’s just that it’s hard for me to get super excited about a game that doesn’t have very specific characteristics, that I know I’m interested in, without knowing more about how it plays and what it’s like. I enjoyed BotW while I was playing it, but I don’t really have the energy to still be coming back to it in 2023 like apparent a bunch of folks do, so the do it yourself crafting vibe falls flat for me.

Something that did appeal to me in the trailer (and that hadn’t so much been obvious in earlier trailers) is how strange the aesthetic is for the new game. Don’t get me wrong, Nintendo is likely to never produce a property that’s actually frightening or disturbing in a meaningful way, but I think it’s interesting how far they’ve been willing to drift from the standard Zelda aesthetic with this (compare it to a game like Skyward Sword, which seems like absolutely no aesthetic chances were taken whatsoever, and which looks extremely bland as a result).

9/10 Zelda games are pretty straightforward, I think this one is the secret fushigi no tenth one, so let’s compare it to the majora’s mask e3 2000 trailer for giggles:

This sounds a little higher pitched than what I’m thinking of - is that the instrument they used for Yu-Gi-Oh!

Also though, yeah, I think SotC (also, to a lesser extent, Portal) on the one hand and Minish Cap, Twilight Princess and Spirit Tracks on the other were what collectively drained the investment I had in the Zelda brand when I was 11 years old (the year or so leading up to and then playing Wind Waker was a childhood-defining experience). If I’d ever even made it past the tutorial of Skyward Sword that probably wouldn’t have helped either.

rejj I sort of disagree, I think obviously a lot fewer people would have played it but the game already feels so far removed from the rest of the series I don’t think nostalgia alone is enough to explain its impact. I mean, every new Zelda arrives on a wave of hype (in the West at least, I hear just like Metroid it’s not as universally worshipped in Japan) but BotW had more tangible influence on the video game industry and popular game design - around the globe, from indie to AAA - than any series entry since the N64 era; you can’t JUST explain that in terms of brand reverence.

If what you’re referring to is the solo instrument at the beginning of the trailer, I can say with 100% confidence that it’s a saxophone. It sounds like an alto saxophone specifically.

Although…

It’s kind of funny to yours truly, an irredeemable dork, to see saxophones being referred to as representative of modernity or high technology. It’s maybe one of the later examples of purely acoustic instruments that became popular in the western tradition, but, it’s still a 19th century invention. Believe it or not the saxophone family of instruments is not a whole lot younger than the modern form of the concert piano, which was only really truly taking shape in the early 19th century.

They never really caught on as being fixtures in orchestras for whatever reason, let’s blame it on Wagner (fuck that creep). However, they’re not completely unheard of. An old teacher of mine actually wrote one of the handful of Concertos for (in his case Alto) Saxophone and Orchestra, but that tradition again goes back all the way to the 19th century.

However, the 19th century is still modern in comparison to Zelda times, and, I’m just being an irredeemable nitpicky nerd about it. This is all I use my Masters in Music for anymore, please indulge me

I’m happy that people are excited for this, but dang it sure does nothing for me. I wish it did.

(I’m on record saying I firmly believe nobody would have liked BotW if it did not say Zelda on the box)

rejj well I’m solid proof that’s not the case - as a known curmudgeon and someone who is neutral to disinterested in Zelda (at best), I liked this game a lot. It’s the only Zelda I’ve played for more than an hour or two, and frankly I’ve only ever beaten one Zelda-like (soliel/crusader of centy), though I played neutopia and neutopia ii for a few hours each. But I beat this game pretty soundly. With botw somebody made the Zelda I was interested in, and if it weren’t Zelda I might’ve liked it even more, but probably nobody but nintendo was going to make that game (until it came out, after which its systems got mercilessly stolen by everyone), and if Nintendo made that game it was gonna be a Zelda.

Unlike sonic frontiers which I played for 3-4 hours because it was sonic and then put down forever because I wasn’t having fun, botw is a game I kept playing until I explored every inch of the world, I daresay despite it being a Zelda game.

I understand that (and why) some people are neutral on it or don’t like it, but in my experience with those conversations those people really like older zeldas, so I’d turn this around and say i think a lot of folks who don’t really like it don’t like it because it has Zelda on the box!
