Nightmare in the Dark is the first game in this thread I’ve been able to make time to play. I rarely participate in discussion about arcade games in this forum because I’ve played like four of them in my entire life (don’t quote me on that), so this one is my introduction to an entire genre of game. Never played Bubble Bobble. My thoughts here are very rudimentary.
I like that most levels are like a score-chasing puzzle, where the boss fights are more about survival: both challenging in different ways. The NoJoTo blog post here goes into the fact that multiple developers had their hands in this, but all I’m thinking here is “hey, I’ve played Metal Slug and seen King of Fighters, these sprites look SNK-ish.”
I couldn’t figure out whether upon death your upgraded abilities went back to zero: movement speed didn’t seem to change but my fireball range and size seemed to keep resetting.
Cool tunes!
I played through the third boss, which had me smashing that Insert Credit button so many times that I figured I’d probably do very poorly against the fourth boss, so I quit.
treefroggy pleased to see at 8:09 he acknowledges “Tower of Dolls” as the all-time best Castlevania track (original to X68000!)
