My MiSTer came in the mail a couple of days ago, and I have to say:
I’m impressed! It’s certainly tinker-y, but things like the update all script keep a lot of the headaches under control. I’m sort of amazed by the value of what you get with this thing. I think you can safely say it’s the future of retro gaming. There’s just really nothing else like it.
My setup is a little lopsided. I’m using a Schiit Modi/Magni stack for audio over optical, which sounds great, but I’m also using a junky old CRT monitor over VGA. I talked to a guy at a local e-waste recycling center and he put me in touch with someone I’m now meeting this weekend to haul away their old RCA MM36100. That thing does component, composite, s-video, and (S)VGA so it’s basically ideal for MiSTer stuff. The catch is that it’s 36 inches and almost 200 pounds, but hey, it’s free and that goes a long way. It’s also compatible with 15khz sync signals over component, which means you can output a 240p signal without upscaling and it’ll handle it fine. Bonus!
In other news, some really compelling updates with both the X68k and Saturn cores:
Both very exciting as these are two systems with great games and horribly expensive hardware/software. Get a MiSTer! It’s pretty amazing!
