Aditionally, this year has been super good both in terms of good/promising early access games being launched AND games in the 90s retro-flavored fps sphere, with some overlap between the two categories. We got Gloomwood, Cultic, Blood West, Ctrl Alt Ego, Lunacid, Dread Delusion, Turbo Overkill, Prodeus just on top of my head, with plenty more I can’t remember right now.

JoJoestar Caves of Qud. Still on early access, but I put like 30-40 hours into it earlier this year. The ultimate cozy and hang-out videogame for me. Full of discovery, sense of wonder and unique quirkiness. Manages to effortless surprise constantly, so good.

Qud is one of those games that makes “Early Access” lose all meaning to me. I’ve never seen a shipped game with a fraction of a percectage of the things there are in Qud

Wow, I haven’t really been playing games that came out this year much at all.

Looking back at it half a year later, Elden Ring starts as what seems like the best FromSoftware game ever, and gradually becomes its own Dark Souls II (pejorative). Good, better than at least 95% of other games even, but, in a way, it can’t help but communicate how it could be better in such a way that you cannot help but feel left yearning for the feeling it gave you before the gold (haha) leaf plating flakes off of it. Elden Ring is undoubtedly, demonstrably, and deservedly a game worth talking, thinking about, and playing to the hilt, but… it is not GOTY material, imho. Generous like grandma.
I mean, it’s not out until next week, but at this point I imagine God of War Ragnarök will be my GOTY, by default, sort of. I’m sure it will be crushingly competently made and you can take that to the bank, it being so at least equivalently to the previous entry is I think a pretty safe bet. But, that’s not exciting, that doesn’t make it earn it a GOTY, so, I think how impressive it will be overall will be how much or in what way it will iterate on the previous entry. Setting aside the fact that this will be narratively iterative and God of War (2018) certainly justified further iteration, and maybe it’s greedy to expect a sequel to anything to be better than the previous game, but you gotta hope that they had a reason to make another one beyond making more money without having to build a foundation for a game from the ground up. There were aspects of the previous game that felt, not half baked, but just a little bit underbaked or overcooked (aspects of the combat, economy, and character customization mainly), so I will be pleased if these aspects are even just moderately more refined.

I didn’t have the money to buy any other new games! I’m interested in other stuff people have mentioned but of course I haven’t played em. I think at this point I’d probably have an easier time at relitigating a GOTY for 2021, but, such is life.

I should try to get my hands on Sifu, the cat game and The Case of the Golden Idol, as well. I played Shin-chan last year, suckers!

I usually pick my GOTY based on the strongest impression I felt that year. For now, nothing has beaten the experience of taking the elevator and going “down below” for the first time in Elden Ring.

Hey, maybe I should give it another chance (and apparently find someone to play it co-op with), that was a rather enthusiastic defense of the game.

Chained Echoes, that indie RPG developed mostly by a solo German weeb since 2016 and released last week, is getting rave reviews

I think I’ve only played three games that came out this year so I’ll put those in order.

Citizen Sleeper
Elden Ring (only about 20 hours into a notoriously long game, so did I really play it yet?)
Triangle Strategy also makes the list by default, but I would not recommend it.

I didn’t play much new stuff this year.
The 2022 ones I played were

Gran Turismo 7,
Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden (aka voice of cards 2),
Soul Hackers 2.

These are all decent games but they all have thier own problems.
If you twist my arm, I’ll say Voice of Cards 2

If my arm remains untwisted I choose Golden Sun

I also have played a heck load of Deep Rock Galactic this year, which technically came out this year on consoles. But I played it on PC because, well y’know. (I also encourage you all to “Rock and Stone!”)

i’m not sure if i played any games that came out this year besides AAAAXY. it’s pretty cool, so i guess if it’s the default winner, it could be worse.

i think the game i most enjoyed playing this year was riven.

umm, forget anything i just said, i watched a playthrough of scorn and it’s my favorite game of the year.

Elden Ring is most likely my number one.
Rune Factory 5. Was a disappointment in some ways to a lot of people but was pretty much exactly why I prefer RF/SoS/HM over Stardew Valley.
Tinykin. Had way more fun with this game than I expected,
I played Radical Dreamers years ago, but since it officially released in America this year, I’ll count it.

There are also games I think would be really cool to have on my list, but I haven’t played them/they aren’t out yet:

Elex 2. Still haven’t played the first one, but it looks so cool to me.
Metal Max Xeno Reborn. Haven’t played any MM’s but someday!

Ace Angler Fishing Spirits. Probably gonna actually buy this one tomorrow. Thinking about getting a physical copy, but $10 more and I have to wait for shipping so???

Not sure what else is coming up that might make the list. There is a billion to one chance that I become That Guy and will claim that Samurai Maiden is actually the best game because it is just like a Simple series game but I honestly don’t see that happening.

Since the rules are lax, I’m going to include the PS1 Resident Evil rom that I could play on my PS5. It had been about 11 years since I had last played it and I had just an absolutely wonderful time doing another Jill run. Perfect blend of amazingly paced exploration, bizarre decor and otherworldly music. Wonderful.

Bloodborne (the expansion to me feels a little worse than the main game, but the main game has more lows than the expansion -it’s logical, though)
Citizen Sleeper (so far the best game I played in 2022, although it’s not as great as other games from other GOTYs)

Ace Combat 5 (the game is really neat and feels quicker than AC7, but the campaign is. SO. LONG)

Elden Ring: i like it.

Shin chan: i like it but not as much as i was hoping to. Still anticipating that boku english translation.

Citizen sleeper: i like it despite having some issues with the writing at times.

Mothmen 1966: not my favorite but fun and visually fantastic.

Mysteries under lake Ophelia:
(technically 2021 but had switch release this year.)
I really love this game. Very chill psx styled fishing game. The atmosphere makes up for few weird control issues. Same solo dev as fatum betula.

Other games i enjoyed this year:
