rootfifthoctave SC was not just a well-made and great-looking 3D fighting game with a relatively large amount of single-player content but it was also the first big, notable instance of an arcade game being completely dwarfed by its home conversion, and it was a US launch title to boot, so it had a ton of cache beyond its niche.

I guess the real question is if the portmanteau is supposed to be “theatre rhythm” or “theatrical rhythm.”

Not that portmanteaus, like acronyms like .gif, need to preserve the pronunciation rules of their constituent words. But, you know. When they don’t they don’t but when they do they do.

I think I like the sound of “theatre rhythm” but I also think I like the connotations put forward by “theatrical rhythm” more… what a conundrum

I loved the Suikoden II cooking but the actual storyline of it was secondary. My main joy was in trying to imagine the likes and dislikes of all of the minor stars of destiny when they would show up to judge your dishes and try and figure out what on earth warrior #23 who has maybe a half dozen lines in the entire game wants to eat.

Hey Brandon took my answer re driving game manual transmissions. Maybe if you spend thousands of dollars on a full simulator setup it could be good, but short of that it just seems like it’s missing the point. To me the part about driving stick that makes it worthwhile is, it’s possible to be bad at it. If you let the clutch out too early or too quickly or not at the right RPM then the car is going to give you all kinds of different noises and vibrations and shakes and shudders that you can feel with your whole body to let you know nope try again. And when you shift well you get immediate positive feedback too. The only negative feedback from a poor shift in an arcade game is the sound of an engine revving too high or too low, nothing tactile.

Recommendations:
Brandon: Duma

Gotta second this recommendation to listen to Duma by linking the video that prompted me to pick up their self-titled album during one of those first BandCamp Fridays a couple years back. Haven’t listened to this in a minute but getting reminded via Brandon’s recommendation (and then feeling disappointment when my scramble to check tour dates shows the only West Coast dates are in CA and not up close to Seattle here) and forgot how much I love this fascinating album.

Rough and textured, not traditionally “metal” but a very helpful way to think of their aesthetic (and not like there’s not similarly atmosphere-forefronted metal bands). Esper linked one of their newer singles that shows they’re now signed to Sub Pop (?!) so bummer they’re not coming up to Seattle for a show, but highly recommend their self titled album too (especially since Bandcamp makes it a pain to get there via that new single).

soapbox I am not an expert on the topic so can’t confirm if it is totally necessary, but you might want to put some kind of photosensitivity warning on that video! There is pretty intense flickering and flashing near the end of the video.

Maybe put a photosensitivity warning and then put the link under a cut? You can get the following result by putting the link to the video on its own line with the line beginning with “>!” then a space.

As in…

…but with that quotation mark removed.

It will end up looking like this on the post:

I love the “Details” formatting on the forum. You can even capture multiple paragraphs in one “Details” button by…

…putting the “>!” in front of…
…a new line with a single line break between them…

…or ones with double line breaks in between them too, for a normal paragraph layout all within one button. The “>!” just needs to be at the front of every line, the exception being that it isn’t necessary to put it on the blank line with the double line break. Just lines with text in them).

You can hide:

in here
as well, just put the “>!” first thing before the “-”
