TracyDMcGrath that does sound ideal. Especially for MAME when there are so many games I’ve never even heard of. I’ve just acquired a set for the first time in a decade so will give that a go once I get set up.

TracyDMcGrath I will second this idea in that even with the whole giant catalog I have available to me on the MiSTer, I find myself more and more drawn to 30 minute arcade experiences or at least parcelling out random 2 to 5 hour games in 30 minute to 1 hour chunks.

If anything, that is the real benefit of emulation. Save states. I never feel like I have to COMMIT to a game. I can play, and if it clicks with me, I can breath a sigh of relief knowing I can pick up where I left of, even if it is weeks later. Or heck, just use cheats and see all the sights the game has rather than again, COMMIT to learning it.

Whoa - now this is my kind of emulation. Alex at Digital Foundry is testing out the new intel i9 12900k and he can make demanding PS3 games like Killzone 2 get up to 60fps.

copySave This is my biggest hope for every system post the late 90’s when it comes to emulation. As the machines became more and more computers, making them play by computer rules. I have seen ridiculous stuff happen with Dolphin and I hope that is the way of the future.

i got one of these…one of the best game-related purchases i have made

the screen is incredible and the onionOS custom firmware is really wonderful. it boots in under 10 seconds into a “game switcher” mode where you can quickly flip through the last 20 or so games you’ve played. this has basically eliminated the netflix browsing paralysis thing i’ve gotten with raspberry pi in the past. i’m just playing shining force II, lufia II and phantasy star IV.

i ordered a bunch of these to give to friends and family as gifts. there is a huge community behind them, so in addition to the custom firmware, people are creating all kinds of little useful apps. for example, someone made a custom boot logo app so i’ve been setting up the ones i gift to say the person’s name in the sega font when it powers on…eyes light up like it’s christmas morning. gaming 4 ever~

This looks way more interesting than the handhelds they sell at Walgreens.

Seeing this thread again made me want to re-listen to the BGGOAT and BSNESGOAT episodes. Still good times 9 years later. Makes the modern production values even more noticeable however, with all the work done to minimise cross-talk. (again, nice work @esper !)

I’m also probably going to pencil in to try any of the games mentioned favourably that I haven’t really played before, now that I’m somewhat happy with my emulation setup.

Emulation’s nice. I use OpenEmu and a hacked 3DS for most of my emulation.

NES emulation on N64 with an Everdrive is nice, too! I just found out that Krikzz has somehow found time to harness the FPGA in his newer ED64s for the purpose. Real cool!! I’ll have to check it out later.

antillese i think tempered film just means screen protector. i don’t use one but maybe i should… i have never actually successfully applied a screen protector lol. the screen is very beautiful and worth protecting

edit: FYI, do not buy the v1 mini, only the v2, it is vastly better in every aspect. unfortunately the v2 is unavailable pretty much everywhere these days except amazon, where you can still get it for about double MSRP, although it will come from a US shipper via amazon. those “in the know” have heard that restocks are expected mid-august. i’ve bought from both the official miyoo store on aliexpress and the website keepretro, would recommend both

How do SFC/SNES games with on-board co-processor chips fare on this thing?

Syzygy not well. see below video. starfox chugs, yoshi’s island title screen seems to be around 50fps but plays at full speed or close in the actual levels (to my eyes)

if you happen to have an anbernic device, performance seems to be similar to the 280/350 series
