I don’t necessarily think games need points of no return, but I don’t see any reason they couldn’t be used based on the tone or theme of the games they appear in. I think a lot of the problem is that they aren’t always implemented well and are more used as a way to slow players down to lengthen a game rather than evoke any kind of emotional reaction. Giant antideluvian space monsters have just landed and are powering up their earth-shattering laser guns? Better go see what that one npc rewards me with for buying him his favorite sandwich first. Granted thats a bit farfetched, but there’s some merit to it.
I also think that the general trend of games being collectathons and players having completionist mindsets plays a role in this as well, though I haven’t given it too much thought to really speak in depth on it.
