The interesting thing is Chinese game devs might well be content to not “break through”, when that would mean competition with foreign companies and they have comically high buy-in rates locally. There are so many continental-Asian-made games (mostly PC or mobile, mostly online multi) that rake in millions per day yet are practically unknown to English-speakers and though the reasons why are complex, in many cases the locally-made clone of Popular Foreign Game is vastly more played than the original— and the numerical population of China and its surrounding states goes without saying.
I have indeed played many Chinese-, Taiwanese-, Korean-made games, insofar as they’re the market leaders in that space and have been for a long time. I wouldn’t know where to ‘start’ talking about Chinese games, because that’s an absolutely huge space. Today, mobile games out of Asia are equally huge, though I play much fewer of those and only on Bluestacks. Just the other day I learned of “Identity V”, for example, to say nothing of giants like Azur Lane, Girls’ Frontline, Onmyoji, etc.. Much like eroge, one reason you don’t see talk about these on mainstream English video game forums is these are anime titty games and their English fans were long since browbeaten to shut up in public spaces.
DNF is Korean, but FYI it’s the biggest game in mainland China and Chinese DNF whales are pretty directly responsible for the overall success of Neople / Tencent Games. The biggest surviving Chinese-made traditional MMO is probably Fantasy Westward Journey.
http://17173.com is a Chinese online gaming / net cafe hub site, it has (voluntary, user-driven) polls on the bottom, first column 新游期待榜 is most anticipated, second column 一周热门榜 is the popularity ranking for current games, this week it’s:
- DNF
- Genshin Impact
- WoW
- Fantasy Westward Journey
- Path of Exile
- Guild Wars 2
- 新天龙八部
- 魔力宝贝 — this is still running on the Chinese version of PlayOnline!
- 剑网3
- LoL
