I’ve been a little overactive on this thread but still thought this was worth it.
Re: Wolf’s Rain
About 4 years ago I had this idea brewing for a podcast that would focus on underdogs or underrated pop culture that I thought should get more of the limelight or revisited. I had a friend who was all geared up to do it with me and we decided on doing an episode on Wolf’s Rain because we remembered it fondly and hadn’t heard nothing about it for over a decade.
So we went back and watched it, and we recorded the episode and during the recording I thought to myself. “This show is not very good y’all.” It has a lot of cool elements - cool art, cool characters, some cool story bits, a cool concept, cool music! But mushed together it just ain’t a good story overall. I think it could be, but all said and done I scrapped the episode because I was like this ain’t an underdog, it’s properly rated.
Then I tried to do an episode about Hudsucker Proxy and the same thing happened! That movie is cool as hell, but it’s also a bit sterile and relies heavily on tropes to keep the audience feeling things. Great movie, but also kinda bad movie. Not underrated. Properly rated.
I cancelled the podcast.
