The big sticking point of that game (and it’s mostly because the screen’s just too cramped past a certain point) is that the game absolutely demands a ton of exacting control if you want to 100% it, and making a single mistake can force you to redo a lot of laborious stuff. Even compared to modern games which have pretty tough post-games, I think this one’s the hardest to all-clear.

I do like it a lot, though, and if you like minigames then goddamn does it have a lot of really fleshed-out minigames. Shogo Sakai did the music and the sound palette is basically just Mother 3’s but without all that GBA hiss, which I’m sure some people will really appreciate.

Ok…I’m considering getting a DSi XL because…..look how good it looks

But… I’ve got a 3DS XL already. Is there any good reason for me to get it?

hellomrkearns There’s a very good reason for you to get it! Playing DS games on a 3DS is a horrid experience, because you can only choose between 1) the devil’s bilinear scaling being applied to both screens, and 2) being letterboxed into a positively tiny size. On an actual DS, the games are displayed in crisp 1:1 pixels that cover the whole screen, and they look especially gorgeous with the chunky pixels of the DSi XL.

So nice. Got a pretty good deal but it doesn’t have a stylus.

Edit: Ugh…I’m having SD card slot issues. getting a “the device inserted in the sd card slot cannot be used” message. The card is formatted as FAT32 correctly and works on other devices. Hopefully the slot just needs a clean…. the manual is of no help.

EDIT: ok good news and bad news. I found a SD card that gets detected as it should. Bad news: It’s 16MB. Yes. MB.

Well, at least I know my DSi hardware is ok, but now to find a card that works. From what I can tell, the only difference between them looks to be physical. The smaller card (black) is flat on the back where the contacts are, but the larger cards (blue) that don’t work have larger divits between the plastic and the contacts. I tried taking a picture but it might not be so clear. So I’m thinking that the card reader in the DSi might not be grabbing the card as closely as it should be…The small one is so old, its when they were called “Multimedia Cards”.

I found one of these in a junk bin at hardoff a month ago. ¥1000 Still works great. Has the prime Wii/DSi era UI design and sound.

Things of note maybe not mentioned elsewhere:

there are savable channel sets you can do per-region
there is a log of all prefectures/areas you’ve tuned into a channel from so you can catch ‘em all
there is a mode where you have little stick dudes in a room in the bottom screen looking up at the top screen and they futz around and sometimes make relevant comments (presumably by scanning the subtitles for keywords)

Only worth having in Japan but it’s a dope accessory. Had no idea it existed till I had it in hand.

MDS-02 so cool! I had one of those digital tv USB dongle at a time where we didn’t have a TV and I thought it was the coolest. You can still buy them, and now they have ones for your phone, but they aren’t as cool as having it on your DS.

MDS-02 does this support bs data modes ? (ie the weather, extra info about the players when you’re watching baseball, etc…)

hellomrkearns The DS has a SD card Size limit due to its age. 32Gb is as big as you can go.

The DS is a system I just can’t really bring myself to emulate because of its unique hardware and games just look awkward and jarring without running on the system itself IMO. I can only imagine how much more pricey the secondhand market will get over the years (and it’s already gone up recently) and I can’t imagine Nintendo ever putting out a solution unless they release a dual screen system again. I thought the Wii U’s DS Virtual Console setup was too awkward to enjoy.

I do the insert, eject, insert, eject, insert, eject, etc to pull the surface junk off.

I’m sure there’s a more thorough process using cotton tip or smaller with isopropyl alcohol and canned air to clean it more thoroughly.

robinhoodie Thanks for that. The largest card I’ve tried was 4GB. I’m thinking the slot might be the issue, although it worked with that super-small 16MB card..

hellomrkearns See that is what threw me. I have hit that SD card to large wall before, so my mind immediately went to that. So SD Cards lower than 2GB are in a different category than everything above (this definitely matters for Wii Softmodding). So if you can scrounge a 1 or 2GB card, see if that gets different results.

hellomrkearns Oh heck yeah. I have been inside enough DSi’s replacing the triggers and seeing that it is a flex cable. You got yourself a pretty easy install. Good luck!

Ordered a new part and installed it without much trouble only to find that the part they sent was defective. Big cut in the ribbon cable.

This year has been the year of the DS for me. What a wonderful little device with a lovely library. I had one as a kid, but all I ever had was Pokémon. I’ll try to snap a pic a later, but I’ve been importing many Japanese exclusive titles. So far, Ripened Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love has been my favorite of all I have bought.
