The PS2 releases of Guilty Gear XX and Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 were probably the games I put the most time in back in my college days (which dates me).
I’d also like to put in a plug for Pat. pattheflip -sempai has coached me on more than one occasion and if you ever get a chance to go to his lobbies, it’s basically the best. Pat, I don’t Faultless Defense every attack now - thanks for beating that out of me and my Jam. My life responsibilities prohibit me from participating much at all right now, but the cool thing about them is that they will always be there when you’re ready to return to them.
I’m not a tournament player, but I’ve probably done more specific things and traveled to “play fighting games” than a lot of my other hobbies. I attended the first two years of PAX (the 2003 one at the LANWerks place in Bellveue that is now bulldozed) and the first official one at the convention center in 2004 because I wanted to go play Guilty Gear with my friends in Seattle, and whomever showed up at PAX. And 20 years later, I’m still salty about the dude who played Testament and beat everyone all day in 2003 was the only guy I didn’t trounce in my pool in 2004!
