Fighting game is something so great

exodus As you are very aware I love truly Bad Fighters! A recent favorite is Battle Monsters for the Saturn (I also love digitized mocap games) but I’m at a loss to categorize it as terrible or TERRIBLE.

Oh also really loving the in depth talk about 2D vs 3D brawlers further down the thread. I wish I could talk coherently about game mechanics because I feel like I have a lot to say!

Karasu I just looked up Battle Monsters, and while I love it, I had so many images in my head already from the title calling up King of Monsters in my brain, that I was just not ready for it.
It’s not often a Saturn title can make the SNES port of Killer Instinct look really good.

yaw, a lot of the local communities are hosting weekly online tournaments now! including the one close to me!

all the games I like are played on PC tho (Tekken and Guilty Gear)… and my current PC is a decade old (built it to play Starcraft 2 lol)

but I bought all the games on steam knowing one day I will have a new PC! with the current quarantine this may finally be the time to make it happen lol

James- I mean yeah, I’d like to think I prepared you for how not great it looks, sounds, and plays, but… yeah. It’s extremely rough and hard to love, but somehow it’s my kind of thing! It’s got a real sort of warmth to it, and it’s amazing to me that in 1995 something so roughly hewn could make it to a physical disc for a major console. I love it.

I keep hoping that someday I’ll come across some footage of the actors in makeup getting the moves all filmed.

I love these complete messes of games too - god darned kasumi ninja for the jaguar!! Or that early tecmo fighter, Angel Eyes, which mixes sprite-based and CG characters! Why! It’s so bad to look at. And if you won with the sprite based character you’d unlock the cg one, and the reverse. why!!!!!!!

I still have a save file for this game where I unlocked all the non-cg characters so you could just play the “good” version of the game… that was my thinking at the time. now my thinking is there might not be a good version of the game :3

I’ve been thinking about this game nonstop for the last day or so (thanks quarantine) and I’ve decided I love it, cause it’s this sort of ‘wild west’ stuff that made the Saturn/PS1 era so much fun. Also, sixteen-bit that is amazing to hear!

There’s something so wild and PSX about that. It’s kind of amazing that you can have both cg and sprite art for each character, and the visual clash of one versus another is just… I don’t even know. I think my brain is too confused by it to have a really solid opinion.

Karasu There’s certainly a level of creativity and willingness to just try weird stuff that doesn’t happen with major titles anymore. It’s a big part of what makes that era so great (for me at least).

This seems as good a place as any to share this: I started a google map to keep track of all the arcades and other venues that are directly requesting or offering alternative methods of support while people are self-quarantining:

Keeping track of Japanese game centers is fairly straightforward—the operators and customers are more tight-knit, so they’re keeping tabs on each other in a public way, plus I’m just generally aware of many of them—but the European arcades in particular are a big blind spot, so if anyone has any tips or just wants to spread the word, let me know and I’ll do my best to keep on top of things.

Speaking of great fighting games, SNK Gals Fighters is now available on Switch via the eShop, using the same emulator as the Samurai Shodown! 2 port, which means it’s now playable locally in multiplayer on the same screen.

I’m turning a back walkway into a yard, and have Big Plans to get back into my NGPC games while sitting out there with a dog. direct sunlight and all that!
