robinhoodie someone else suggested softmodding and getting a eu copy since they’re super cheap. I guess i never thought to softmod anything since I’m too worried about bricking things.

I do wish they put more eshop titles on sale. I have a loose few dollars left on the account to get like a gameboy color game or something. kinda useless!

hellojed There are step by step guides (https://3ds.hacks.guide/) that if you take your time and follow to the letter will get you through. I don’t exactly condone piracy on modern-ish systems. But region locking on a portable is kind of unforgivable to me. Also they are done updating the firmware I would assume, so less likely you will be locked out of functionality.

exodus The 3DS was my favorite SMT console since the PS2! SMTIV and IVA for originals plus really good re-releases(Soul Hackers, Devil Survivor ½, Strange Journey).

I have a bunch of 3DS games but I think Animal Crossing New Leaf defined that entire console for me. I’ve never spent more time with any game and doubt I ever will again.

you know, I did the region hack on mine and it was such a pain to get set up in the first place, and also a pain to change back and forth that I just never did it after the first time. I wonder if it’s different now. I specifically region hacked my 3DS to play the rocket slime game that was only released in japan.

exodus Just double checked and put my copy of Dillon in my US 3DS. Booted up no prob. So it would seem the modern hack makes the system region free instead of switching the region.

I softmodded a 2DS at the beginning of quarantine and did the same with a 2DS XL a few weeks ago and the process was 1) Very easy to follow and relatively quick to set up in March (was done in an afternoon while working on it intermittently and 2) has gotten even easier and faster since then. And this was the first time I did a software mod of any console. Highly recommend it. Especially as some stuff is already getting disappeared from the eShop (Etrian Mystery Dungeon, for example).

I first got a 3DS XL when they came out, but later I traded it for an original model of 3DS, and it’s the one I use to this day.
I like it for being the smallest one. Nintendo never made a 3DS smaller than the original. Even the New 3DS standard model was a little larger than the OG 3DS. I appreciate the compact design and crisp display.
Installing custom firmware on 3DS was just difficult enough to make people wanna pay me $30 to hack theirs in 10 minutes. There were days where I had homies lined up out the front door of the place I was staying at, waiting for their 3DSes. I ran a pretty successful and chill operation for a while using the magnet method of hacking the 3DS.
I keep it fresh. the menu theme also plays the First Triangle song from Policenauts.

I’m more a fan of original DS’s games, there’s a lot more 2D stuff. 3DS I think never really had any games I felt were “for me” aside for ports and stuff… I played a ton of Outrun on 3DS every day. When I hacked someone’s 3DS, I always put Mother 3 on it using the Virtual Console injector. I think Mother 3 could have really taken off with 3DS users. This is me being as positive as I can, because honestly, there was a lot about 3DS and the whole era that disappointed me. I think it had to do with being in my early 20’s and having a really bad time. I clocked over 600 hours of play into Animal Crossing New Leaf… So yeah I’m actually not the biggest 3DS fan and it represents a lot of what I hate about modern gaming… But there’s plenty of goodness to be found. Like Crimson Shroud.

Oh man, I love the 3DS. When I am going away for a while, I always throw it in my bag. I’ve spent many an hour on buses, planes and trains getting stuck into 3DS games.
I got my first 3DS in summer 2015, I was studying abroad at UNCW and a buddy was playing Pokemon, so I decided to grab one on eBay. I ended up sinking a bunch of time into Pokemon Y and Omega Ruby.
reilly_a_cat if you have trouble with hand cramps you can look into ergonomic grips - I found Metroid 2 unplayable until I got one and afterwards zipped through the game in a couple days.

I really resent the Switch for “replacing” the Nintendo handheld line as it doesn’t fulfill anything I liked about them. Even the larger 3DS models take up way less space in a bag that the Switch does, and they feel very solid. I have no problem chucking it in a backpack or a pocket when I’m on the move. They are also much cheaper than the switch, so not a huge deal if they break. Finally, there’s the battery life. Even more demanding 3DS games run a decent amount longer than a Switch, but the battery is way smaller also which means I can charge it from a portable battery pack. I would have no worries about playing 3DS for the entirety of a 12 hour flight. Luckily there are still many DS and 3DS games I want to play so I imagine it will be my main travelling companion for years to come.

Kez traveling with a 3ds was always great. Aside from the points you made Street Pass was incentive to bring it along. I got a lot of enjoyment out of seeing a bunch of random miis show up after waiting in an airport.

’cause picrossing on the switch without a stylus feels off to me know, especially with those noisey buttons, I’ve been playing a bunch of another licensed picross game Jupiter did called Pictlogica Final Fantasy ≒. In some ways it’s similar to the Pokemon one, but you collect Final Fantasy characters. Each stage has a normal picross puzzle, and some also have another set of puzzles where you do a bunch of simple quick puzzles that trigger attacks and things in a FF inspired battle mode. It’s pretty neat! I like it more than having powerups.

It’s also a F2P thing, so at the end of each group of stages you have to wait a period of time before you can move on. As you get further into the game this time increases, last one for me was a couple hundred hours? Doesn’t bother me, as I just play something else, or go back to old stages to complete challenges (things like don’t use magic, or only use knife users, that kinda thing). If you’re system’s hacked you can edit your save file to remove the time limit, but you have to do it each time it occurs, so I haven’t bothered. There’s a slightly wonky translation patch:

I’m glad someone bumped this thread but I’m always this close to talking so much trash about what I don’t like about the 3DS…. I’ll try and appreciate it, does anyone want to play Triforce Heroes with me? That game seems slept on as one of the most creative and funky Zelda games to date. I remember the lobby where you juggle a music box that plays acoustic covers of songs across the whole series….. and I remember it very well because I never would match with anyone over wifi and never got to actually play the game, only hearing the lobby songs. LOL . They really should have released a Mother 1-2-3 collection on 3DS, that would have single handedly saved gaming.
Playing smash on a portable for the first time was something I had waited for since I first got the original Smash Bros. while I was in the first grade…. But it wasn’t enough to single handedly save gaming for me.
No one really saved gaming, I think gaming died on the 3DS actually. In that photo of my 3DS homescreen, I hardly played any of those games. Animal Crossing, Bravely Default, Etrian Odyssey V are the ones I played the most. The rest I tried but didn’t get into. I downloaded all the DLC for Daigasso! Band Brothers P, I need to actually give that a shot again. But honestly, the concept of pressing buttons to play music in what is essentially a new version of the canceled GB Music, seemed legendary when it was released, but not something that seemed fun anymore on hardware that should be more advanced than the MIDIs Daigasso! had.

They did pull the classic “Final Game that Pushes the hardware” with that Luigi’s Mansion port though. They had to make a lot of sacrifices, but I wonder how many people played through the whole thing? I didn’t. Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon was honestly offensive to me. Luigi seemed sterilized of any character that he had in the original, and the music as well was just bland by comparison. It got all positive reviews though, I didn’t understand how. I felt pretty burned when it was the first and only time I bought a game digitally to get it at midnight instead of going to a midnight launch party at gamestop. It was also the same year I would boycott gamestop forever more, though. I still went to some midnight launches, but when it was turn in line I said I was boycotting gamestop and only there to wait in line and talk to gamers.

Does anyone have any recommendations for games that could be played one-handed (no giggling at the back)? I’m having an operation on my arm in a few weeks and won’t be able to play anything that requires any real dexterity.

I have Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice and a half-finished save of Etrian Odyssey Nexus lined up but I’m going to be busted up for 4-6 weeks at least so could do with something else.

LeFish Earthbound was specifically designed to be played with one hand.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers probably has the greatest story of all the first person dungeon crawlers on 3DS.
Bravely Default lets you use left/right as confirm/cancel in menus if you enable it in the settings.

The 3DS had such a weak launch that it’s surprising that it’s probably my favorite Nintendo system ever now, kinda the opposite of the Switch which had a great start but has been losing some serious steam the past few years. (I’m not super into Animal Crossing, sorry)

Some of my favorite 3DS games include

Ocarina of Time 3D (OoT was already my favorite game of all time when this came out and I put like 90 hours into that game on 3DS between Master Quest and 3 Heart runs)

Pokémon Moon (I love Alola, such a great region)

A Link Between Worlds (A much needed return to form for the series)

Kid Icarus: Uprising (I would let them re-release Smash Ultimate for the next 15 years if it meant getting a sequel to this game)

Shin Megami Tensei IV (Probably my favorite setting in a video game)

Fire Emblem Awakening (I always loved the children mechanic)

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance (In retrospect, not a great game but it was my first Kingdom Hearts game so it holds a special place in my heart)

Tomodachi Life: This game was the funniest thing in the world to me when I was 14

It’s 2021 and I STILL use my 3DS, I’ve been playing Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux on it recently, been meaning to pick up a copy of SMTIV: Apocolypse too when it goes down in price.

I would love that… KI:U is my favorite 3DS game. Just make smash a forever game to fund it!

That game seriously had it all. The gameplay, the characters, the voice acting, the humor, the music, a billion weapons, achievements, trophies like Smash, online multiplayer (I remember playing 1v1s with someone from a forum!), the inventory puzzle builds, that cool thing they do with the menu.

And AR cards???

Yeah, I’m having something of a 3DS renaissance lately, by picking up a few games I missed the first time through (7th Dragon II: Code VFD and Stella Glow), playing another game of Etrian Odyssey V, and so on.

Has anyone mentioned that SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked and SMT: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker are also quite good? It’s kinda wild that so many SMT games came out on the 3DS, of all systems.

I’ll agree that the Switch baited me with BotW, Mario Odyssey, then never delivered that type of quality ever again :0
I was expecting an N64 situation, where we got a solid bunch. Was Metroid Prime 4 a hoax all along? I dare say Yes. It seemed like they gained a lot of inspiration from the tragic death of Satoru Iwata, but after those two games, IDK. I enjoyed Link’s Awakening and ACNH, but they need to keep that 90’s ball rolling.
