everyone talking about the controls, making souls comparisons, I have two words for you and it’s:
KING’S FIELD
haha you all have been tricked into playing King’s Field. How does it field?
thebryanjzx90 2 is so good. I spent more time wandering around in the town and playing it than I did playing 1, hahahah. When I played FF6 for the first time, it reminded me of how the first area in MML2 is snowy.
TheFragranceOfDarkCoffee Learning that each dungeon has a shortcut to other dungeons as you go is cool and fun. The realization that it’s not a series of small dungeons, it’s actually one really big dungeon is a dopamine rush I have very rarely had in other games. I think the only other game whose level design gave me the same kind of gleeful rush is Dark Souls. Very effective little game design trick.
here’s the part where I say for the 100th time that Mega Man Legends is secretly a third person King’s Field game aka a happy medium between King’s Field and Armored Core that very intentionally took inspiration from at least King’s Field but probably also armored core.
The movement controls are identical!
Nemoide So I’ve finally put Mega Man Legends in my PS2 hooked up to a Panasonic pro video monitor and started it up!
we are both playing this game using Panasonic CRTs….
On your anecdote about 90’s gamer culture: I appreciate that I was seven years old in the late 90’s, because it meant I got what were considered to be “kiddy” games in the US, which were actually super ballin’ 2D and 3D games in Japan, or ballin 2D games from earlier that generation like Mega Man 8, Bomberman, Mega Man Legends, Rayman, etc
Me too! The tutorial is brief and uninstrusive compared to games of the Wii generation. I don’t see why anyone should complain about it. When I was seven years old in 1998, the tutorial helped ease me into a scenario that was actually really fucking terrifying to me at the time, being trapped in a… glup… … scary dungeon
IrishNinja down to join y’all if part 2 or tron bonne is up later this year!
seconding this, and I think it’d be neat to bookend the year with it in december or november, since it’s all snowy and not-christmassy!
thebryanjzx90 Just checking but he’s not a decapitated human head on a metal body right
I haven’t played through either of these to completion and I don’t think it’s said anywhere in the games but apparently technically the lore is that all these humans have bodies that are either partially or completely mechanical lol.
gaagaagiins puts it exactly as I interpret it:
Gaagaagiins The end result is a don’t-think-too-hard-about-it, almost tongue and cheek approach to transhumanism and artificially constructed personhood.
also, ah, wow, @Gaagaagiins , cyber-folk is actually how I would describe myself! did you just coin that term?
Gaagaagiins I definitely remember that my copy would either fail to load or had unbearably choppy audio during the introductory cutscene, what I can’t remember is if that was the copy’s only major problem.
Mega Man Legends II, along with my other two or three playstation games, was the first time I experienced degradation of optical media, as a seven year old child whomst no one instructed how to properly handle optical discs.
Nemoide yah dude, I said in my first post how much I always get stuck on the city hall mission. and I love the controls in this game. So I think it’s something else. I don’t remember, and I still need tips to get past it, haha.
