The video is a bit bland for what it’s trying to convey, but essentially he hits and pitches at the best level of anyone in the sport. The biggest risk for what he is doing is injury, and he’s had a few down years because of injury. Even in those poor years he’s performed at an above average level. Don’t want to dig into too many of the acronyms or context of the modern game, but his hitting ability is among the top 5 in the sport while his pitching ability might be top 3 in the sport. He has 7 different types of pitches to pull from and a 100+mph fastball. The typical pitcher is lucky to have 3-4 decent pitches and hit low/mid 90s.
The pull for teams to have him focus on pitching or hitting to avoid injury has been pretty strong in the past and will always nag at him as he ages and risk of injury increases. Ohtani is adamant about playing both ways, and is able to back it up beyond a gimmick. MLB recently added the DH to both leagues so no pitchers will have to hit ever again. Yet, one of the best hitters in the game today is also one of the best pitchers. When Babe Ruth pitched he was not the dominant home run machine he’s known for or anywhere near as complete a pitcher. Ohtani is a once in a forever talent, no one has competed at the best of both hitting and pitching and with the rule change no one will again, specializing in one or the other at an early age will be the path for future players. On top of all the pure ability, he’s just a super kind and charismatic person. He just loves playing baseball and it comes thru in how he carries himself and in the dedication he has for his craft.
The money is all TV broadcasting, the one thing cable has is live sports and even that will die off eventually (Dodgers recent TV deal is 25 years $8.35 billion). MLB’s streaming service is one of the best available and they sold their technology to Disney which they used to build Disney+. Teams got a cut of that too. The sport is growing internationally and any team with Ohtani will get a bump from Japanese advertising.
This video is a bit more hype for Shoehei:
