Like I personally wouldn’t consider the Might and Magic games dungeon RPGs because there are different towns to explore (not just town menus) and metroidvania (is there a better term for that?) traversal elements. But they’re definitely blobbers.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2004)
i think i played this for like 2 hours when it came out? not a star wars fan, and BIG not a fan of the jerky start/stop pause/go of bioware games. is this like, a necessary game to have played, actually? i don’t feel like it needs to be on this list but i’m a hater, so
Rez (2001)
rad game, i should finish it one day. don’t think i’ve played past stage 3 in the like 20 years i’ve been poking at this one

been on my wishlist for ages, i know when i play this i’m gonna totally love it cuz i love a puzzley game that unspools itself like this one apparently does (see also tunic, which i have played to beyond 100% and LOVE). the main thing keeping me from it is that it’s a first-person game, and i frequently get motion sickness from those. i also don’t really have a pc to play games on and would be playing it on my ps5 and that seems like an awkward way to control it? idk, i’m bad at first person usually but that’s on me

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss (1992)
this is an interesting pick!!! it did some really cool stuff for the time, pretty advanced and unique first person 3d navigation for 1992, not just a graph paper dungeon crawl but actual environments with angles and levels and interesting places/things/people to find and interact with. might go back on replay this one day and see how it holds up! ultima underworld 2 i also really loved. honestly what all the ultima games were doing back then (except 8 and 9) were really cool and boundary pushing and have sadly kind of been forgotten in these modern times. ultima 7 was an open world game in 1991 that does some of that stuff way better than modern open world games do, i was blown away back then by being able to go to a field of wheat and harvest the wheat then take it to a mill to make flour then add water to the flour and put it in a fire to make bread and then go and eat it or sell it or put it on a plate next to cute lil pixel forks and knives, as a distraction from the ongoing murder mystery i’m trying to solve. that’s not ultima underworld but still. those games need more respect nowadays!!!

The Last Guardian (2016)
first tried this out a few months ago – got stuck very early on because i wasn’t sure what i was meant to do or if i had the right idea but the controls were getting in my way or what. i have the same problems with ico and SotC – on paper, absolutely wonderful little adventures, but in practice the game keeps tripping over itself to show me to cool things it can do. learn to tie your shoes or get some velcro first, bud! that said, i really do like ico/sotc and i should give last guardian another shot, maybe find a guide to have open. seems like this is here to represent the “big time games is art actually” thing that ico/sotc would always represent in this kind of list in years past, and while the previous two games were for sure influential, at least to designers and probably less like, reverberant to players, i dunno, does the last guardian push this mode of game even further or is it just representing something else?

hell yeah, this is a game i always forget i have and then see it on my laptop and then go and lose a week’s worth of free time on. seems like this is the modern-day agreed-upon pinnacle of the series
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (2013)
man. this game really is kind of incredible and overly generous. never really got into mmos much but because it has the whole big free part you can play, and i was depressed with a good chunk of free time, i went HARD on this game, and it’s a real fun final fantasy theme park to run around in, and plays pretty miraculously well on console. i don’t really have game pals and so was worried about having to link up with some online strangers and while that happened a little, it was pretty seamless and everyone is real nice on there, but it’s such a minor part of the game if you want it to be. kind of more of a massively single player rpg with as much multiplayer bonus content as you wanna add to your experience. plus triple triad. i’d have kept going but i ended up getting a full-time job and there was no way i could juggle the two. i keep thinking about my lady on that server though, and i’d love to go thru and see what the rest of the game has in it, even though i’ve forgotten like 90% of the story and picking it up in the middle of the 3rd expansion or whatever would probably be much less impactful. nice to see it on the list as like, an mmo that normal people can play too
Shenmue (1999)
it’s supposed on be on this list i guess, it did some unique things at the time, cool thought experiment of a game at this point but just play a yakuza instead.
Bioshock Infinite (2013)
never played a bioshock (i have an fps repulsion) and this one looks hella dumb
Dragon Age: Origins (2009)
too much bioware on this list!!! i played this for a while and had all the same issues with it as i mentioned above and ALSO they have all these queer relationships in it, but the whole gothy witch-ass woman is STRAIGHT??? you can’t romancer her as a woman ?????? and then the one actualy queer woman i had in my party was this like, high femme lipstick lesbian caricature who talked about going shopping for shoes or something after a big battle and i got so fed up with this game’s shit and dropped it. like, it really felt like a bunch of cishet men wrote these characters based on some middle-school fantasy they had and didn’t consult an actual lesbian? plus the combat is annoying as hell

Tetris Effect (2018)
man, i love tetris obviously, and this game is good, but i kind of feel like it’s a little bit of kind of overblown as to how revolutionary it is? yeah it adds the like Zone Mode or whatever which is a cool twist on the formula, but i kept hearing about how synesthetic the experience is with the merging of visuals and sound and music and haptic feedback for a full sensory experience and like, they made a tetris that makes you FEEL things and like…. idk, it’s tetris? with cool graphics? good game but like…. it’s tetris.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (2000)
fun ass game, did something interesting and novel, fairly unique as far as ways to interact with points and environments. i’m not really a high score chasing player but this is one of my exceptions
The Secret of Monkey Island (1990)
hell yeah, i love this era of lucasarts games. this really is one of the best, i can’t imagine i have much to add that hasn’t been said countless times
Pokémon Gold and Silver (1999)
gotta have a pokemon on here i guess, i keep thinking i’m gonna like these games and i always burn out super hard like 8 to 10 hours in. i do see the appeal though, and for a type of player that isn’t me it’s a great series
Metroid Prime (2002)
i was one of the many people who was super not looking forward to this one at the time cuz like how dare they do a 3d on my metroids? but it didn’t turn out to be like, another doom clone, and is less of a first person shooter and more of a first person explorer. i’ve only played it on gamecube, but the one-button aiming there did a LOT to make this game real fun. i almost feel like the modern updated control schemes would make this way less enjoyable for me? but yeah, great lil adventure, fun to roll around and scan plants and read about the fauna
Undertale (2015)
blhhh this game was pretty thoroughly spoiled for me before i played it so i feel real limp towards it. everyone was talking about it and how like it does some STUFF but i had the stuff ruined (ie don’t kill anyone for good end, the first boss is a trick so actually don’t kill her, final boss does save file thingies etc) and so the rest of the game was like, a decent enough fanmade-feeling game, albeit one with a lot of artistry and skill behind it. i just kinda went thru the motions to the end, and then was told “oho you missed a couple secrets, find them for the best ending” and i was just super didn’t wanna play it again and dropped it. even though i guess replaying it is part of the whole experience on account of how it keeps track of previous playthroughs so that’s cool but the game itself didn’t inspire me to NG+ it. i also feel like i was just plain too old to get anything out of this one regardless, kinda having seen many of this game’s references and tricks before, and also just like emotionally not connecting with it. i tend to bounce off stuff that has Wholesome Energy and while this isn’t repugnant or anything, it just doesn’t do it for me, in the way that like steven universe is way too twee for me. the hater in me wants to just straight up call this one overrated but like, i know it also did bring a lot of stuff to a more mainstream level that wasn’t necessarily there before undertale so, some props for that i guess?
Final Fantasy VI (1994)
ff6 is The Best Final Fantasy but ff4 is the best final fantasy. never did finish this one actually, quit at the halfway point and i keep meaning to see what that world of ruin bit is like

god i ate every morsel of meat on this game’s bones in 2002 then i crakced it open and sucked the marrow right out. definitely far from perfect and maybe the rereleases do some stuff to work on its problems? super fun and chill game though. also anyone else remember how much hate the cel shaded style got when this came out? i still don’t get why it got that reaction. i mean, i do, cuz of gamers and weak forms of western masculinity, but still, it’s gorgeous, what were people thinking??
Fallout New Vegas (2010)
never played a fallout, they’re so so super ugly and i can’t imagine looking at one of these for 40 hours or whatever and enjoying it. i’m starting to think i generally dislike modern western computer rpgs?

solid enough rpg but too long and idk, is it recency bias putting it on the list? so far i’ve mostly been mind-vomiting my thoughts on the games as i see them, and i haven’t really talked about wtf this list even is or why a game should be on it but like, is this really one of the all time greats? did it do something of note? i played the whole of the original non-royal version and i had a great time but it’s also bloated. looks cool though. idk
The Sims 2 (2004)
never really played a sims except for the first one when it was the new thing and i had to make my sim empty the trash and clean up which living in my filthy young-adult depression pit of an apartment and the frission of realities i was straddling freaked me out and i never played a sims again
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997)
great game obviously, also has more or less been outdone and polished by its sequels but SotN is something of a fulcrum in gaming history, so i’ll allow it here as a representative for just like…. iga

another one o them fulcrums. i never had an snes so played this way later in an emulator and even though i was expecting a fun time i was still pretty blown away by how much i enjoyed this one. did some cool lil bits of storytelling within the actual game and not just some cutsceney textboxes which i guess i wasn’t expecting.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)
i did for some reason play the crap out of morrowind back when it was new, despite its many many flaws. the writing and setting and like, lore were all super fascinating to dig into and there were a couple times i felt like i had found something i was very much not supposed to (even though obviously it was meant to be found). i can’t image playing morrowind today, though. super rough game. anyway oblivion like removed all of the crazy building-sized mushrooms and insects and vanished underground rusted half-cyborg dwarves, and replaced it all with Fantasy Forest and Demon Zone and i played it for a while but the weird damage scaling leveling system made it super unenjoyable to play, on top of it being just a kind of limp setting
Final Fantasy IX (2000)

Inside (2016)
wow, everything on this list is prettttty mainstream, huh? like, things don’t need to be obscure to be good but it’s saying something that Inside here strikes me as an indie outlier after all the previous entries. cool game though, was glad i went into it totally blind cuz i had a ton of fun in that final chapter. does the thing where story and gameplay merge in their own ways and is pretty good about showing and not telling. “It Kinda Makes You Think”
Hollow Knight (2016)
if you gotta get your Night Symphonies and Metroids Super on here cuz those are the halves of that one genre’s name, you probably need a modern example on here too. this one adds dark souls in to the mix! this game is really fun though, and i got super absorbed by it when i played it. love the way the mapping system gives you juuuust enough to go forward but still makes those steps scary as hell. combat is just fiddly enough while still giving you the control you need to whip out some last-micosecond moves. i quit probably like 80% of the way through though, it’s probably a little too hard for its own good. i keep thinking one day i’ll try to see the ending but idk, i have so many other games i wanna play. i really do like this one tho

Half-Life (1998)
once again, fps and me aren’t a good mix. i played hl2 first and surprisingly found that one to be pretty fun!! i think hl2’s use of like physics and vehicles etc made it feel more to me like a first-person mega man game, somehow, rather than another pew pew pew game. i tried going back to play hl1 afterword and i just couldn’t do it, man. it’s all like, ugly and claustrophobic and the balance falls too much on the shooting side of things for me to make any progress. i guess it did some things to revolutionize the fps but like, i don’t think about care about revolutionizing the fps
Final Fantasy X (2001)
i kind love being a hater about this one, i think it’s extremely overrated! i don’t really like any of the characters and the combat was like… there, i guess? i don’t really remember. blitzball was annoying and the puzzle catacomb things were tiresome but i do like the blue-sky okinawa vibes

played the first like hour or so of this after coming home v drunk and i thought it was cool in that state. got up to the one like boss guy outside your house where you punch each other and you skid like a quarter mile or whatever? didn’t touch it again after that one session though. maybe i’ll check it out for real, the single-shot camera thing is a fun bonus. i kept putting this one off because of how comically masc it looks and i didn’t care to be all veiny about it but i should give it a fair shot

never played this one, i always put it in the same place as firewatch for some reason? like, slightly bubblin’ above the indie underground, walking simulator that is accessible to more than just deep gamers? i guess these and like, gone home kind of demark a point on the timeline where “indie” type games were starting to be seen as a viable type of gaming for a larger portion of players out there?
Hades (2020)
ok i do like this game, and i’m not like, hating on it, but i feel like it’s maybe not one of the all time greats like everyone else seems to? i played it quite a bit and had a blast but i also kinda felt like i’d seen everything i needed to see from it before super too long and just like, faded on it. the moment-to-moment loop is great and the variety of ways to play makes it interesting but my interest in hopping from room to room and bopping dudes really waned. maybe some crazy new gameplay mode opens up that i didn’t get to but i didn’t feel like sticking it out that long. real fun while it lasted though!
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
this one really is that good. i had a minor silent hill (1-4) obsession back then. really curious to see what the remake is like.
Super Mario Bros 3 (1991)
absofuckinlutely, this game perfects its form, adds a lot of novelty to it to be extrapolated upon later, and is just super fun to this day to run around and just and do all the lil actions mario can do. mario world is probably also on this list and it’s the same for that one too.
Portal (2007)
yeah! this and its sequel are great! i love a puzzle game anyway but like obviously portal is it own thing and keeps “showing is hand” in clever lil ways. none of the puzzles in either game are total brain busters, but still have just enough friction to feel good to get thru. really nicely tuned games.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009)
never played this one, never really played any of em except once i tried to play the first uncharted and it was all running around an indiana jones level in a jungle and it was fun to hop around or whatever and then i got to a spot where i had to shoot like literally a hundred dudes that would not stop coming and as i have mentioned i am pretty bad at gun stuff and so i didn’t make it past that point. maybe this game is good, but i also think i don’t like naught dog games – my attempt at playing the last of us was EXTREMELY similar in that it was fun to poke around the world and then when it came time for literally the very first combat in the game i found it impossibly difficult and dropped it
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
i’ve only played this one once! gobbled down those first 2 games though. i really liked mgs3 even though i kind of rushed through it a little bit cuz i wanted to see it all (and also get to mgs4 and play it the same way, to catch up on the games i’d missed). despite that i had a great time with it, and i should go back and really luxuriate in this one and let it breathe.

oh yeah this was kind of a thing at one point? i did play it a while after its initial release and had a cute lil time of it but i think by not playing it when it was fresh i missed out on the like, novelty of the cooperative multiplayer aspect of it? very enjoyable though, i do love a game where the goal is to just chill out and check it out
The Last of Us Part II (2020)

Street Fighter II (1991)
i’m so bad at fighting games!! this is the one everyone knows and everyone thinks should go on one o these lists though. never got the hang of this one, the one move where you have to like move then cram a tight quarter circle loop into your action never made sense to me. the only fighting game that ever really clicked with me was soul caliber 2, cuz that’s like, horizontal attack, vertical attack, block, move. i can dig that.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)
hellllll yeah this game rules, and i’m pretty sure it’s not just nostalgia blinding me here but this is a for real solid game with a pleasantly full world to poke around and just enough friction in the combat and puzzles to make it constantly compelling. it’s frickin zelda idk man. it’s really rad

god i was SO PSYCHED for this and when i finally got it i played the CRAP out of it but i have unfortunately kind of fizzled out, i have a save file in the like, magic academy in the swamp that i have yet to pick back up which i think isn’t even that far into the game even though i already have like 50 hours racked up? once i beat the game i’m playing now (like a dragon ishin) i’ll jump back in and see what’s up. i dunno. there’s so so so much i love about this game but it’s probably TOO big. this might be one of those games i just always have around and pick at for a while until 5 years from now i beat it or whatever, though. i first started playing it like i was gonna obliterate a month of my life and plow thru it nonstop and i’m glad that didn’t work out haha

really cool choose your own adventure of a game!! i like how much it felt like the choices i made weren’t just like, option 1 2 3 but actually felt like i was chasing a narrative thread that was meant to be tugged at, and not me wandering around a main storyline and veering off into some strange interlude for no reason. didn’t know that death/game over screens were a thing until like 34 hours in tho and i lost a big chunk of progress cuz there was no sign that was every gonna happen, and then i upgraded my ps4 to a ps5 but i couldn’t move my old ps4 save over and so i just kinda dropped it two thirds of the way through.

ahh yeah i mentioned this above but it’s one of the very few fps games i enjoyed. there was really one one part of the game that i found severely difficult and it was focused on like putting turrets in place while shooting a bunch of guys that come in and once again i am terrible at gun stuff so that was a huge roadblock until i got past it. never played any of the lil sequel mini chapter things tho, come to think of it
Dark Souls (2011)
obviously. it’s great. wish the remaster kept the bloomy-ass lighting of the original version though, something of the atmosphere has been lost in the new version that is hard to get back without a ps3 or like, having the old “prepare to die” edition on steam which isn’t supported anymore

Funbil I should clarify, “Nope” just means I haven’t played those games! So I have zero thoughts on silent hill 2, and Final Fantasy (and seemingly square rpgs as a whole) is just not for me. As far as Majoras mask, I’m pretty cold on Zelda as a whole outside of the switch games, links awakening and Link between worlds.

I found it. It’s from the best Genesis games ranking. The background is: listeners voted for the games under consideration, and a significant portion of the episode consists of the hosts insulting the audience for selecting Streets Of Rage 2, but apparently omitting the superior 3rd game. However, SoR3 was voted in, but as Bare Knuckle 3, which was only discovered in the closing minutes of the episode, throwing the process into turmoil

I like Streets of Rage 2 more than Streets of Rage 3, and Streets of Rage 4 is my favorite. Streets of Rage 1 is ok. This concludes my Streets of Ranking.
