Mainichi Issho and Weekly Toro Station were my favorite applications on any Sony platform. I liked Mainichi a bit more than Weekly Toro Station since it did literally update almost every day, and if you watched enough updates, you could possibly receive points or items from them that you could use to decorate Toro’s room. Some of the Metal Gear updates were really good, and I believe he interviewed a cardboard cutout of Snake at some point.

I’m happy we got at least one (1) Toro dynamic theme for the PS4, but it’s one of several on the JP side. I’m still bitter at Astro Bot getting any attention when Toro is still right there. At least he gets a cameo in the little Astro Bot PS5 game…

Hey gang. Haven’t posted for ages but the first question spurred me to come back and say hello.

Growing up in Australia in the 90s, people would often refer to finishing a game by saying “I clocked it”.

As time went on I would say that this more specifically referred to 100%ing a game, but it was definitley used in place of beat or finished.

therealdadsy I’m from New Zealand and we used “clocked” as well - at least when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s we did. I have no idea why though lol

As an Australian I have to corroborate that we did say ‘clocking a game’ during the 90s/2000s when referring to finishing a game. Not sure what people say now though.

More recently I’ve heard the phrase ’I’ll clock ya’ when referring to beating/punching a person. So I guess that’s how that phrase has evolved.

Still a big fan of the cheat menu in Spider-Man on the PS1. If you enter a swear word, Spider-man pops up and punches the word, and it transforms into a nice word like “flower” or “puppy”

I’m American and I use clocked for this purpose. There’s an association with gender and trans stuff, too. Clocked in this context means recognized as trans, the opposite of passing. But I’m familiar with it simply meaning “noticed” too.

I find clocked is also often used here as a descriptor of “punched in the jaw/head”.

I think Aussie slang often comes from words that just sound oddly satisfying or fun to say. An extension of larrikinism / making light of everything. But sadly, a lot of this kind of slang is often born out of phobia or violence too.

yeah, clocked also just means “noticed” over here divorced of any context. but it’s got a kind of old person feel to it somehow.

it’s also pretty widely used in a less fun way in the trans/gnc community as “being noticed as being trans” usually in an unfriendly way. “I thought I was passing really well, but got clocked by the cashier” for example.

Frank is correct in playing Rent-A-Hero in hi res. Watch 4K/60 Model 3 and Naomi games on youtube, holy moly. I think that might be the best video games have ever looked

yeso The bright primary colors and “blue skies, good vibes” of Dreamcast, Model 3, and NAOMI games are my favorite aesthetic of video games ever and it is a tragedy there aren’t more games like those.

I always assumed Toro was just some marketing mascot who made cameos in games, but I had no idea he had a game that was a life sim until Tim mentioned Doko Demo Issho and this game sound both fascinating and delightful. Tim is also right in that Animal Crossing characters are Toro rip-offs because now that I have paid attention to Toro for more than 2 seconds, I cannot unsee a cat version of K.K. Slider, or perhaps K.K. Slider is a dog version of Toro. That Toro blog thing sounds delightful. Also, Tim mentioned Pepsiman and coincidentally today is the day I have been meaning to play Pepsiman for the first time.

klendool some googling suggests it originated from rolling over the score - once you reached it’s maximum value, you’d roll back to zero, and that explanation for the origin of the term feels absolutely right to me
