My favourite train level is from Goldeneye, I used to smash that level non-stop.

I think VNs suit the episodic structure best, or at least that is how I tend to play them. Like I’m putting time into 13 Sentinels currently, it’s best if I play a chapter in a sitting - which I treat as it’s own episode. I haven’t played Asura’s Wrath but it came to mind as a game that filled the bill.

MMOs answered how to correctly do the episodic/time sensitive quests or events decades ago, no? Instead of small weekly installments over months, it’s daily micro installments over years.

Do you count the intro train sequences of Half-Life ½ as video game trains? I always found those sequences to be pretty cool.

The train in ff8 was my first thought as well. The entire heist is a memorable set piece, and the best part is how the galbadian army somehow anticipated that someone would steal the entire train car without them knowing it - and had the foresight to replace the President with a zombie double who would attack would-be kidnappers.

I think being drip fed one Mega Man X level a week for ten-ish weeks would be good. You don’t have to remember what you were doing; what you were doing is “playing a Mega Man X Level”. An episodic tactics game would probably work great too (as long as the story was actually committed to being episodic). Really just give me one really solid level/map/board/zone a week and I’d be happy.

I felt a little sorry for MoxBagel. It kinda felt in the edited result that he was getting a lot of “What does this even mean?” and “who cares?” I know that’s something of a staple on the podcast, but there was just so much of it. I don’t know I would’ve felt super good as host after that.

billy The Games for the Weans / GCHC recommendation is a good one - my little brother spent a bunch of childhood hours playing a hospital Mega CD courtesy of that very charity.

I’ve been thinking about this since yesterday.

The hospital had a few Game Boys, as well as SNES / Mega Drive consoles on TV trolleys, but the Mega CD was in a retail-style display stand with a big lit-up picture of Sonic on top and a price list for the console, games and accessories down the sides. They wheeled it around as requested, same as the TV trolleys but I now realise that it being in a retail stand was cynical as hell and if it came straight from SEGA and wasn’t donated by a shop or something then SEGA are dicks.

I always loved the train in Skies of Arcadia. I love when it turns on with the blinding white light, when the big bad is chasing you across the roof of the train, and the silliness of severing the train car in half to escape.

I love the Half Life 1 opening, though I suppose we’ll get into semantics about trains vs trams. In which case, the Goldeneye train level is pretty darn cool too.

Also, The Procession to Calvary rules! I definitely recommend it. Super well-written and overall a fun time.

Coffinwarehouses to me the most memorable part of the Phantom Train was always exploring it and who the heck is this Siegfried guy (I still don’t really get that part) and wow you can fill up your party with ghosts!

thebryanjzx90 The entire Phantom Forest and Phantom Train sequence is such a strong vignette! And both of the themes are some of the best pieces in the whole game.

Any Densha de Go train is my favorite train in games and I was delighted it was mentioned.

The train stage in Capcom vs. SNK [1] is a pretty excellent train.

Pleased to see so many people with taste recount the train mission from Final Fantasy VIII. Truly the best entry in the FF Train Trilogy (VI VII and VIII) for letting you summon a dang train later on.

Shacho Eiyuden: The Eagle-Shooting Heroes sounds like a fascinating and unique game I absolutely need to play. I feel like I’d be way into wuxia stuff and should check some out.

Also, I will definitely watch The Salute of the Jugger in the near future because anything about a fictional sci-fi or fantasy sport or some sort of sci-fi or fantasy variation of a real sport (like the SNK sci-fi sports games such as my beloved Super Baseball 2020) I find fascinating.

Reading the prompt, this answer doesn’t quite fit, but I did enjoy The Great Knight or Hero or Whatever-He-Called-Himself Zote in Hollow Knight. This is a character that looks like the protagonist, randomly shows up in the first town proclaiming to be the great hero, needs to be rescued by the protagonist, and cons a self-appointed damsel into thinking that he saved her. You can then go into her dreams and fight what she imagines him as; this is a repeatable fight that becomes more and more difficult and one of the few things in that game I just didn’t want to bother with after a point.
