that was Macario before she went down with an ACL…which was a little more than a year ago and the team never really committed to a formation suited to her absence in all the time since. They finally moved in that direction in this game, but too little too late of course

the social media comments are incredibly nasty about this. The players are getting a nice check by normal human standards from playing in the tournament even with the early exit, but the amount of psychotic hate vs best case scenario you make dentist money for 8 years, then transition to the regular work force w no other skills… Even NFL minimum guys make more in a short career + have health insurance and benefits than all but the tiny handful of women’s soccer players who get like a nike deal or whatever. It’s still either middle class money or first year teacher money during your twenties, so nothing to get to broken up about though, but it’s a different dynamic I think

A shame it went to penalties, I never like to see a match decided effectively on a coin flip. The match itself was a close affair, and a pretty good game of football.

The Aussie GK definitely deserved to win that session. Too bad the losing shoot came to the 19 years old kid, that’s never fun. Would be cool to see the Host country in the finals.

I thought it was pretty poor, frankly. But so is the rest of this World Cup. Maybe it’s rose-tinted glasses but I remember everyone playing better football four years ago. I hope France gets a proper set pieces coach to teach them what to do with all those wasted corner kicks.

will catch up with the replay after work today, although I’ll probably skip the kid missing the pk, I also hate seeing that. I keep thinking about how little many of these players make and the consequences of leaving the tournament in the earlier stages in that regard. I imagine the USWNT is the only one that shares tournament payouts with the men’s side 50:50, and even that’s like ~~70K/year~~ (edit: after tax it’s more like 47K) accounting for a 4 year cycle. And it’s wild how much some of the feds undermine their actual women’s teams (Spain, Canada, Jamaica - which had to GFM their trip to the tournament). Looking on the bright side: I won’t have to switch to a Tin Tin avatar!
