This channel is worth a follow. A couple days ago they uploaded a LaserDisc copy of Daicon IV using the Doomsday Duplicaor. Gives a good comparison to show just how much cleanup that upscale did.

Yet another channel posted a restore comparison of Daicon III just a few days ago. This one is sourced from 8mm scans!

Daicon IV rules. I discovered this like 15 years ago and it got me into ELO. The album this song is from is pretty neat too. Concept album about a lost time traveller.

I went down the rabbit (heh) hole today reading up on it. Facinating story. I had no idea.

I also enjoyed learning that they did a homage to it for the opening of the live action TV adaptation of the famous 2channel “train man” story.

I felt like I learned something about Japanese humor when I learned the 1973 story “JAPAN SINKS” also spawned a satirical story, within the same year, called “EVERYTHING BUT JAPAN SINKS”. and when a movie adaptation of JAPAN SINKS was made in the 90’s, a satire follow up also occured within the same year.

Of course now we have the 2020 JAPAN SINKS Netflix program. Which I have watched and enjoyed. I was really really interested in why they so prominently talk about access to reliable to information following a natural disaster, and then found out that that’s been a feature of the Japanese goverments post-disaster messaging ever since the 1923 kanto massacre.

I’ve seen people in America over the last year blame California wildfires on antifa and jewish space lasers [and in 2019, Australian wildfires on muslims]. I hope we also dont have to have a massacre before we learn some lessons Japan has already learned the hard way.

This has been on my mind because I expect California to have The Big One within my lifetime.

Moon Such an interesting question. Just like on the podcast, our first goal must be to decide what it is about Daicon IV that we are looking for in a video game. Is it the fact that it’s an impressively flashy sequence about an entertainment product that otherwise does not exist? Or is it the impressively 80s aesthetic? Or something else entirely, perhaps.

My answer is about the production.

The Daicon III and IV Opening Animations are two short, anime, 8 mm films that were produced for the 1981 Daicon III and 1983 Daicon IV Nihon SF Taikai conventions. They were produced by a group of amateur animators known as Daicon Film, who would later go on to form the animation studio Gainax. The films are known for their unusually high production values for amateur works and for including numerous references to otaku culture, as well as its unauthorized appropriations of both the Playboy Bunny costume and the 1981 song “Twilight” by the English rock band ELO.
Daicon III was made by Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga and Takami Akai and Daicon IV credits twelve people, including Yamaga as the director and Anno and Akai as animation supervisors. Despite the questionable legal status of the works, the production of Daicon III resulted in debts that were repaid by selling video tapes and 8mm reels of the production, the profits of which went to the production of Daicon IV. In 2001, the anime magazine Animage ranked the Daicon animations as the 35th of the “Top 100” anime of all time.

The game was developed by programmer Shinobu Yagawa, who would later work on games like Battle Garegga, Pink Sweets, and Ibara.[1] The music for the game was composed by Nobuyuki Shioda.[5]
As its name indicates, Recca was created for a shooting game competition called the “Summer Carnival” by Naxat Soft, which took place on July 17, 1992.

This has probably been caught plenty of times in different circles, but I have been really fixated on it:

The music reminds me of Bomberman 64, the primitive 3D visuals are very nostalgic. It all works really well together. Digging into the musician behind it, he does actually have some albums up on Spotify, including some new ones!

According to the source himself, there is no extended version of that song, only the length made for that opening. So I guess there you have it, then.
