My introduction to sokoban came during late grade school as I borrowed my friend’s graphing calculator. It was a fun distraction but I didn’t find my way back to them until much later. It was actually getting in to roguelikes that rekindled my love for the genre. The slower pace, novel but familiar rules, and meticulous level design hit just right.
A few of my favorites:
Stephen’s Sausage Roll (PC)- This game was so entrancing from the moment it started. It had the right amount of challenge, new plays on the established rules, and a great number of puzzles so it ended up being a game I played for over 20 hours.
Kwirk (GB)- I found this game after my reintroduction to the genre a few years ago. The turning mechanic makes for a very enjoyable twist on the genre and the fact that it’s on a portable system makes it a great commute/before bed game.
Trepa (PC- Itch.io)- Marcos Donnatuoni has a great feel for what makes a fun but challenging block pusher and I’ve come to enjoy all of his games so far. Trepa is my favorite and has an interesting Crush (PSP) inspiration.
Baba Is You (Switch, PC)- The balance between block pushing and rule making, well, it scrambles the brain in a great way
Honorable mention:
Kine (Pretty much everything)- While I enjoyed the puzzles and multiple characters, I couldn’t get past the music and had to mute it and find some jazz of my own to play in the background.
Currently playing:
A Monster’s Expedition (PC, Apple arcade)- A nice challenge with a very relaxing vibe. The individual puzzles are smaller than SSR so it’s great for pick up and play.
SNAPto (PC- Itch.io)- Most familiar to SSR in look and feel and sense of discovery. I am so excited to see what will become of this game
Looking forward to:
Room to Grow (PC-Steam)- The growing Cactus
Lab Rat (PC- Steam)- Great demo
Altered (PC- Steam, Itch)
Bonfire Peaks (PC- Steam)- Set your belongings on fire
The Golem (PC- Itch)
Pipe Push Paradise (Pretty much everything) and Hiding Spot (PC)- Steam bundle sale!
