Best soundfeel in games

There’s something about the voice acting in the Sega CD version of Silpheed. It’s kinda cheesy and over the top but I think it has a lot of charm. And the low quality sound lends to the feeling of listening to comms chatter in a spaceship.

milo I like the samples and comms chatter in the original Starfox for the same reason. That low-fidelity “Emergency. Emergency. Incoming enemy fighters. Prepare for launch.” as you first deploy on Corneria was pretty impressive for the time. The chatter between your wingmen was also great–their unique “voices” had so much personality:

I cant hear the Mortal Kombat theme song without feeling like I’m running through a smoke filled lazer tag arena wearing a heavy sensor vest.

The original PlayStation startup sound still has a lot of power after all these years.

Plucking veggies out of the ground in SMB2 sounds great.

Earthbound uses samples and the snes sound hardware to great effect. Pitch bending and warping sounds to create unease.

Console startup sounds are a rich source of audio nostalgia, and the PS1 startup is way up there. I came across this excellent and very thorough breakdown of how the sound is produced recently:

very hard to top this. put it on in another tab and just listen to how the sounds are like insane computer noises and people getting the shit kicked out of them and screaming. the music is one of the best uses of genesis’ awesome nauseating modulation effect

tapevulture Yeah, those crunchy grimy genesis/MD sfx are incredible in the right hands. I wonder if Yuzo Koshiro had a hand in the sound design as well as the soundtrack for these games…he’s pretty active on Twitter, I guess I could just ask him!
