◉◉maru yeah this was one of the design challenges since in Downwell often the biggest threat is getting hit from above, while in this game that wouldn’t feel very fair. So enemies can hit you from the sides, but once they get a couple meters above you they’re removed from the game.
But yeah that absolutely encourages new mechanics to create more danger from below. I explore that a little with some enemy attachments that add rotating hurtboxes. But to keep the project simple I took the shortcut of increasing fall speed and spawning more spikes as you get deeper.
Could definitely build something more differentiated from Downwell to release as a full game but I feel like so much charm comes from those original designs. So I’ll probably be keeping this as a little experiment for now. I was just thrilled that Ojiro Fumoto (Downwell designer) enjoyed seeing it!
