I missed a lot of the 360/PS3 era as it was happening because of a combination of being broke, having bad living situations, and being incredibly depressed and not interested in the hobby. This was a fun listen for me though!! I always love hearing about stuff I’m mostly clueless on. After finishing I ran to the 3DS store and grabbed Gotta Protectors on there to try out Matthew’s suggestion.
By this point I’ve played all the Big Ones here. Deadly Premonition, Nier etc. Nier is a PS3 game to me though lol. Deadly Premonition is one that I really fell in love with at the time but as we’ve gotten further away from it and, idk, my awareness of certain things has gotten more nuanced, I don’t know that I can ever really revisit it and not feel weird about the whole thing.

To me the button pressing action isn’t even the reason I come to Musou games. I come to them because yeah you’re a wild superhero but you’re also constantly managing the battlefield. They’re management games to me. You’re trying to do everything you can to just carve through the maps. You’re responding to requests from other NPCs, you’re sending troops to disrupt problem areas, you’re combing the map for your own objectives. I think there’s a lot more to them than just the square square triangle combos. Recently they’ve been doing some really cool stuff with their licensed titles too. Persona 5 Strikers is a pretty significant design shift in most aspects of the Musou formula.
All that said yeah you gotta be down with the square square triangle anyway. I love it and don’t need impact or friction or whatever. It comes from other stuff and I’m down to just lawnmower some faceless troops in between.
