My kid is three and seems to want to be a beekeeper (his mom is a beekeeper) or an astronaut. We try not to encourage it, but he is extremely macabre. He really wanted me to tell him about the two gemini astronauts who burned to death in an accident. Sometimes he asks me what would happen if (for instance) someone chopped his body into a thousand tiny pieces.
He doesn’t seem too disturbed by these ideas. But I worry that the reality of mortality will suddenly strike him and then suddenly these entertaining ideas will be scary. Not sure where he picked up the ability to conceive of such things, honestly.
Weirdly enough, I was absolutely morbidly obsessed until we had the baby and then my brain tucked all that away in the back of my head because it became too painful to think about as a parent. It has actually been a huge relief to not be totally consumed with the insane, capricious cruelty of the world.
